← Back to BSU's 90th Birthday
Here I am again. I would like to comment on registration day at Bemidji State Teachers' College in the fall of 1940.Quarter tuition was $10. We took our fee statements out on the porch at Deputy and got our books free. There were 104 students in school when I graduated at Thanksgiving "43 with a BA ., 100 women, 4 men, all of them 4-F. I am so proud of the fine education I got at Bemidji. Happy Birthday, BSU!

I enrolled at Bemidji State Teachers' College in Sept of '40. College was fun and everything was greater than I expected. I fell in love with a football hero and we were an item. Unfortunately, he was in the reserves and was shipped out after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Japanese attack also had a negative effect on our Concert Choir, under the direction of Carl Thompson. We had been reheasring :"The Mikado", had purchased costumes, and were building scenery. Naturally we had to switch operas and start all over! I have many more stories of my college years (1940-43) the cost of tuitions, books, the names of professors, and other stories of those times. I would love to put them in print if you are interested. Sincerely, Jewell Mendenhall 218-547-0020

Thank you BSU for great memories! I started classes at BSU in 1965 as a very shy high school graduate. I lost 15 pounds before I was here a month because of my fear! You'd never guess that today! My experiences at BSU and the Newman Center helped me to overcome that disability. I went on to be employed at BSU, 28 or so years now. I remember Deputy with the very tall ceilings and beautiful wood before the remodeling; the Union in the basement of Sanford where I played cards; my first memory typewriter, the unbelievable Data General computer and then computers that were not fast enough even though they were only a year old! Yes, I wore the green beanie and I knew Bob Scarpino (Comment #17) too. Thanks for the memories!

Happy Birthday BSU! I have many wonderful memories and lasting friendships from Bemidji. One of my favorites is being part of the Beaver Hockey Program...jogging around campus on Saturday mornings after Friday night home games, fishing trips, dry land training conditioning, library time, and winning championships. I still enjoy coming back to visit for no specific occasion or to catch some current hockey games...the great tradition certainly continues. Go Beavers!

After looking at the pictures and reading some comments had to add a few of my own good times I had while attending BSU. Two of us attended in '64 from New Jersey, we had no idea where we were going or what to expect. Attended my first hockey game that winter and it was outside. Was there for Coach Peters arrival, opening of the field house, what a relief for watching games, saw first two games between BSC and ND, we split the series I believe. Worked on the Social Commission for 3 years and first President of The Student Union Board last two years. Accepted "the key" during the student union dedication. The last two pictures show homecoming queen on the field, one of my biggest highlights had to be being her escort during halftime, one of the few times a non athlete had the honor of escorting the queen. All in all besides some of the friends I made and still keep in contact with today, BSU gave me some great opportunities. Congradulations BSU on 90 years.

Happy Birthday BSU! I am very happy that I picked Bemidji State University. There are so many memories from camping out with friends to walking along the lake in spring. BSU started me on a path that has lead to Taiwan. I will never forget Gerald M. Schnabel, a professor who influences my teaching today. I will also never forget the opportunity to speak to my graduating class.

Congratulations, BSU! I could not have chosen a better college, and I am so proud to be a 1976 graduate from BSU! So many memories...Oak Hall, Tamarack Hall, many hours spent at Bangsberg Hall, Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Madrigal Dinners, voice lessons, organ lessons, operas, musicals, third floor practice rooms, so many awesome music professors, and also Lutheran Campus Ministry, the Campus Center, weekend retreats, campfires, and Walnut Hall services on Sunday mornings. The best part of all this was making so many wonderful friends. Happy Birthday, BSU and thank you for four wonderful years of my life!

Many, many memories of BSU. It all started with being a Blackduck HS student and participation in Science, Band, and choir competitions held on campus. Based off of those experiences, and also the Military Science Department, becoming a BSU Freshman in the fall of 1987. As a Poly Sci Major, tons of memories of Haug Sauer hall and all the classes there. Great Advisors with Dr. Alex Nadesan and Dr Gerry Schnabel. OTE, and ring the bell in front of Tamarack hall at 0602 in the morning 62 times :) Finally getting my diploma in the spring of 1991 from Dr Duly. So from Soto Cano Honduras...Happy Birthday BSU...thank you for all the memories!

Nothing beats watching the Beaver hockey team win the Div II National Championship in 1997! As FM90's play-by-play voice of the Beavers that whole year it was a very sweet victory to watch!

I have great memories of BSU. From the tour that I took as a High School senior to giving those tours for four years, and working in the Admissions Office! Singing in the Choirs, Madrigral dinners, great roommates, the tunnels, the Cave and great concerts, are just a few of the things that made BSU special to me. It is a beautiful campus and a wonderful place to spend college years. Thank you and congratulations!

Here are some of my memories of BSU. I went to school in Bemidji from my 6th grade year to my graduation from high school and then BSU in 1979. During that time I bicycled all over campus when I was growing up and loved to go through the little tunnel under the steps in front of Deputy Hall. They took it away when they remodeled. I also remember a day when campus was not in session and I and a friend went into the tunnel from the lab school building but we did not get too far as they had the lights turned out. I always knew I wanted to attend BSU. I was fortunate to have a successful sports career in 4 different sports. I spent a lot of time traveling to away games and meets in the old station wagons which we athletes had to sometimes help drive. I have fond memories of the seasonal changes on the beautiful campus, fall leaves crunching under my feet as I walked to a class, the first snowfall when people were out throwing the first snowballs of the winter, those bitterly cold winds as I opened the doors to get into the tunnels, and of course the first big blue day on Lake Bemidji when the ice was finally out in the spring. I also remember all the creative snow sculptures that campus clubs would build during the winter snow week events. Happy Birthday to a wonderful northland institution. I hope everyone who has attended BSU has great memories like I do.

Attending BSU was an experience I will never forget. I spent 4 wonderful years at BSU and will never forget the wonderful times, the wonderful friends and of course all the wonderful Teachers and Staff at BSU. Originally from Northern Minnesota, I moved to Southern California when I was 11. But, upon graduating from HS, I attended a local Southern California Jr. College for two years. I felt I was missing something and I missed Minnesota. So, I loaded up the Ford Pinto and headed to BSU. So happy I did. I love Northern Minnesota. My heart remains with you all. But, I must confess, it is much too cold, for much too long. I was forever in the Tunnel System. So, after graduation, I returned home to Southern California, where I remain. But, I do miss BSU and all of Minnesota and all my dear friends.

Happy Birthday. I had four wonderful years at BSC, which dates me (1958-1962). Memories, coming to mind at this moment... Mr. McMahon and the Northern Student and Ah-Mic office and the staffs of those publications, much laughter and going weekly! The tunnel system. Birch Hall, fun, friends, food. Enrollment of the 1000th. student. Walking to the high school, in the cold, to student teach. Oh, yes, the beanies. And the beauty of the campus. Diane Hoselton Genova Sept. 4, 2009

I entered Bemidji State College as a freshman in 1969 when we still had the little green caps. Rumor was you could not take it off until the football team won their first game and with some very dismal seasons chances were looking poor for their removal. I have a lot of memories but what surfaced when the E-mail arrived was the tunnel system on campus. I recall sitting in the Student Union looking out at the snow in sandals and cutoffs (Art Department uniform) and realized that I had not been outside for over a month. I was determined upon graduation to move south.

Congratulations Bemidji State University on your 90th Anniversary. I had the opportunity to take Bemidji State University classes brought up on the Iron Range through the Arrowhead University Center (now Arrowhead University Consortium). Dr. Gary Sniede was my first advisor when I started my taking Business Administration classes. I finished my Bachelor of Science degree with Marty Breaker as my advisor. Thanks Bemidji State University for the vision to realize that not every student can come to the Bemidji State University campus and bringing the classes to the Iron Range where some of the students live and work.

My favorite memory is meeting my wife, Kim (nee Knott) for the first time on Oak Hall 1C. It happened to be my first day on campus as well. It's been more than 20 years (Sept 1987) and I can still remember it clearly. I have very pleasant memories of my three years at BSU and am a very proud alum but that's my fondest memory.

Parking on the lake, BSU Hockey, Madrigal Dinners, Luigi's Pizza, The Bear Bear, Theatre Dept. poker nights, The Imaginary Invalid, The Boyfriend, Something Happened on the Way to the Forum, Fall, dropping Chemistry as a major, my fist D, my first A, choir auditions, my first rush party, Mad Dog 20/20 parties, all the houses I lived in... and somewhere along the way, the great education that I somehow managed to achieve. Thanks BSU.

I think that there must be something in the air at BSU that is addicting, because I have spent a little over a 3rd of my life here. I attended Daycare here while my mom was going to school, I was 5 and went every other day when I wans't in kindergarten. A year or so ago I remember walking a prospective student over there to see it. I hadn't been there since I was 5, and when I walked in, a flood of memories came in, it smelled the same, and I just remember being little and playing there. I also have received my bachelors and am working on my masters through BSU, so a big part of my adult life, including my proffessional has been spent walking these hallways, pathways, sitting in the classrooms, eating in the union, parking on the lake. One of my BEST memories was meeting my husband! We met here at BSU, between the upper and the lower union. We spent lots of time in the study rooms in the library together! :)

While I was only at BSU for 2 years, I look back fondly on that time. BSU was an amazing place to learn about yourself - lifelong friendships formed & my mind challenged. I will always love BSU. Go Beavers!

BSU has been a big part of my life. I was born and raised in Bemidji, attended the Lab School through 6th grade, went to the Tech College and have worked at BSU for 33 years. When I started here as a temp in Personnel, Deputy Hall wasn't remodeled yet and the office was located where the Records Office is now. My first full-time position was in Phy. Ed. and we used typewriters and a ditto machine and I usually went home with blue fingers. I learned how to use my first computer when I worked in the News Bureau office. I remember President Bangsberg's funeral in the Fieldhouse (his daughter was in my class), Dr. Stafford's inauguration in the BSU Gymnasium (I worked in Phy. Ed. at the time and she left her fur coat in the office); Dr. Duly whistling in the halls on 3rd floor and saying you shouldn't, his funeral in the BSU Gymnasium, and the big cake in front of Deputy Hall for the 75th Anniversary. Happy 90th Birthday BSU.
