The following guidelines will be
utilized to develop the 2004-2006 Academic Calendar:
The academic calendar
should
- promote student success—put their learning needs first
- by building adequate and well-spaced breaks into each semester, and
creating semesters
that have the same number of instruction days;
- maintain our current
standard of 15 classroom hours per credit;
- include well-spaced and periodic
breaks that facilitate student, faculty, and staff health and well-being.
Consultation with Relevant Groups:
(Planning committees should send initiatives to student
senate, bargaining units, alumni, other planning committees, community,
etc. as appropriate
for feedback before an initiative is brought to University Council. A
Planning Initiative Listserv which includes all bargaining unit heads,
the student government president, and university council members is available
at PlanningInitiative_L@listserv.bemidjistate.edu.)

indicate which organizations you have consulted with in preparing this
initiative as well as the date the initiative was sent to the Planning
Initiative Listserv:
Activities to date include the following:
- AAC surveys of academic departments, student and university
services directors, and administrative offices (Fall 2002).
- Development
by AAC of proposed Guidelines based on survey results (Fall-Spring
2002-03).
- AAC and SUSC joint meeting at the request of Senior Vice President
for Academic & Student Affairs Joann Fredrickson, based on charges
of the committees (February 2003).
- Survey of faculty and staff through
the fac-staff listserve and through a mailing to the planning committee,
bargaining unit, and student
senate (February 2003).
FYI: The next steps include the following:
- Survey of the student body on calendar issues (results due
March 21, 2003).
- Development of model calendars based on the guidelines.
- Opportunities
for students, faculty and staff to offer feedback on the proposed calendar/s.
- Revision
of the calendar, as appropriate, based on feedback.
- Joint AAC, SUSC
