Mathematics Major B.S.

Note: If the student’s high school mathematics courses and/or the Mathematics Placement Test indicate a lack of readiness for calculus, the student will be placed in one of the following precalculus sequences: MATH 1470; or MATH 1110 and MATH 1470; or MATH 1110, MATH 1170, and MATH 1470.

I. Required Core Courses

MATH 2471 Calculus I (5 credits)
MATH 2472 Calculus II (5 credits)
MATH 2480 Multivariable Calculus (4 credits)
MATH 3210 Foundations and Discrete Mathematics (4 credits)
MATH 3310 Linear Algebra (4 credits)
MATH 3631 Probability and Statistics I (4 credits)
MATH 4980 Research Project and Presentation (0 credits)

Subtotal 26 Credits

II. Required Field of Emphasis

Select one of the following Fields of Emphasis:

A. General/Applied Emphasis

Students taking Emphasis A are strongly encouraged to either obtain a minor or take significant course work in one or more of the areas in which mathematics is applied. Examples are: Computer Science, Physics, Business Administration, Economics, Accounting, and Chemistry.

MATH 2490 Differential Equations (4 credits)
MATH 3410 Introduction to Analysis (3 credits)
MATH 3741 Numerical Methods and Optimization I (3 credits)
MATH 4371 Modern Algebra (3 credits)

Select one of the following:

MATH 3632 Probability and Statistics II (3 credits)
MATH 3742 Numerical Methods and Optimization II (3 credits)
MATH 4470 Advanced Calculus (3 credits)
MATH 4480 Complex Analysis (3 credits)

2. Required Electives

Select at least 6 credits from groups a. and b. At least 3 credits must be from group a.
