Chemistry Areas of Study


Chemistry Major, B.A.

This program is designed for students who intend to pursue further professional studies, or who seek employment in areas where knowledge of chemistry would be advantageous. Specific required courses are held to a minimum to allow the student considerable flexibility in designing a program of study. The student should also select a minor or a major in another area.

Chemistry Major, B.S.

This program is designed for students who plan a professional career in chemistry, in a related science, or in a professional area such as medicine or dentistry. It will prepare the student for graduate study in the sciences. Students are advised to speak with a chemistry advisor, as this curriculum may soon change.

An internship in a field of chemistry or related field is strongly advised. Participation in an internship greatly enhances the placement of graduates. Internships normally are taken during the summer between the junior and senior years, but some internships also include time during the academic year. These internships for the most part are paid positions. Students wishing ACS certification of their degrees must participate in research at Bemidji State University or an internship or both.

Chemistry Specialty, Science Education Major, B.S. (Teacher Licensure)

This program is designed to meet the requirements for Science teacher licensure with a specialty in Chemistry in the State of Minnesota. Students who complete this major will be eligible for teacher certification in Chemistry in grades 9-12 and for teaching all sciences in grades 5-8. Students should consult their academic advisor in Chemistry prior to developing their program.
