Bemidji State University Accounting Program Receives Specialized Accreditation

At the 2009 annual conference of the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE), the Board of Commissioners announced the granting of specialized accreditation of the accounting degree program of Bemidji State University.  Accreditation by the IACBE assures the high quality of Bemidji State University's accounting program.  Accredited programs have been examined by trained evaluators who ensure that the IACBE's standards are being met in eight key areas:  outcomes assessment, strategic planning, curriculum, faculty, scholarly and professional activities, resources, internal/external relationships, and educational innovation.  The quality of the accounting program is measured by the accomplishment of the school's mission and broad-based goals, the effectiveness of student learning, and the operational effectiveness of the accounting program.

Dr. Robert H. Roller, President of the IACBE, notes that, "accreditation is recognition that the accounting program of Bemidji State University demonstrates academic excellence and a commitment to continuous quality improvement.  The IACBE is especially interested in the assessment of student learning outcomes.  The accreditation process is one means of making certain graduates are well-equipped to excel in the business world."

"Accreditation is more than just another credential for institutions," adds William Parrott, Director of Member Services and International Programs for the IACBE.  "Accreditation requires evidence that a school's programs are meeting high standards and producing measurable, high-quality results."

Based in the Kansas City metropolitan area, the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education is the premier business accrediting association for business programs in student-centered colleges and universities.  Bemidji State University joins a growing list of over 225 IACBE member institutions throughout the world that support quality assurance in education.

Accounting students offer free income tax return assistance

Feb 23, 2009

BEMIDJI, Minn. - Bemidji State University students who have completed the Tax I course and passed Internal Revenue Service certification tests are donating their time to the community for the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

The free workshop is open from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays through April 15. It is located in Decker Hall 14 at 1717 Birchmont Dr. NE in Bemidji.

The student volunteers will use their tax knowledge to provide assistance to other students, including international students with special requirements, low-income and elderly individuals in the area who may be uncomfortable or unfamiliar with tax law and filing requirements.

The program not only offers free preparation, but also free e-filing for those who qualify. With e-filing and direct deposit, those who qualify typically receive their refund in 8-10 days. In the preparation process persons who qualify for Earned Income Tax Credit are able to receive a larger refund than just the taxes that have been withheld from their paychecks over the tax year.

Minnesota Property Tax Refunds for Renters can also be prepared and e-filed by VITA. However these refunds do not usually arrive until late July or early August.

The Accounting Club is providing hosts and hostesses for each session to facilitate the orderly registration of clients and assignment to the tax preparers.
