Program Specifics
Our program is designed to provide
students with career opportunities in public accounting, private,
and in not-for-profit companies. The freshman and sophomore years of
the program concentrate on liberal education requirements, including
economics and mathematics, principles of accounting, and computer systems
courses. Transfer students usually have met these requirements at their
respective colleges and universities and find the transition into their
junior year at Bemidji State University relatively easy.
The junior year normally consists of introduction to
professional accounting, intermediate accounting, cost accounting, not-for-profit
accounting, and business law, along with basic core requirements in management,
marketing, and finance.
Many students take additional credits to meet the 150 semester hour
requirement to become a Certified Public Accountant. Students work
closely with their advisors to develop a program tailored to their
specific objectives.
Several of our students sit for the Uniform Certified Public Accountant
Examination (CPA) after completion of the program. Usually over
30 percent of first-time sitters pass the exam. The national average
is less than 20 percent.
Graduates can also take the Certified Management Accounting Examination
(CMA). This examination is primarily for those interested in private
accounting careers. Both the CPA and CMA are excellent additional
credentials.
