Scholarships

BIO Endowment Fund Award

The Biology department, through the BSU BIO endowment, is able to provide funding to students to assist with research equipment, supplies and travel. Awards are in the range of under $100 to several hundred dollars. To apply, fill out the application form and get it to Drs. Guelda or Koch by 1-November 1st 2004 at 12pm.

Department of Biology Scholarships

Department of Biology Scholarships range from $400 to $1000 and many require a 3.0 or higher grade point average. You can download scholarship applications here as either an Adobe PDF or a MS Word document, or they can be obtained from the Biology bulletin board (around the corner from S269). Applications are due to the Biology Department Chair on or before 1 March each year, and announcements of scholarships awarded will be formally made about the first week of May. The class years specified in the descriptions refer to the years in which a scholarship may be received. For example, freshmen can apply for the Mary Helen Tartar scholarship, which would be awarded to them for their sophomore year.

  • Aquatic Biology Scholarship Fund. Selected by the Biology Department. $500.
  • Harold Borchers Scholarship. Harold Borchers Scholarship-Based on student's interest, work ethic, and commitment to scholarship; gpa not as important a selection criterion. Awarded to a sophomore, junior, or senior Biology major. $600.
  • Gurnee Bridgeman Biology Scholarship. Declared major in biology, with a 3.0 gpa, with a preference for: (1) a Graduate student doing original research in biology; (2) an undergraduate student working to complete their capstone experience (3) other undergraduate biology majors. $500.
  • Enbridge Energy Scholarship (Formerly Lakehead Pipeline Scholarship). Student must be a junior or senior in any Biology/Geology Departmental program, including pre-professional students. U.S. Citizen preferably from Northern Minnesota or Canada. One-half of the awards in Applied Sciences. One scholarship is awarded through the Department of Biology. $500 ea.
  • Fishing for Fun Emeriti Scholarship. Student must be a junior or senior majoring in Biology or Chemistry, minimum of 3.25 gpa. The Department of Biology and the Department of Chemistry will award one scholarship in each Department annually. $400.
  • Evan B. Hazard Scholarship. Student must be a junior or senior and have completed at least one of the following BSU courses: Ornithology, Scientific Communication in Biology, Entomology, Taxonomy of Seed Plants, Mammalogy, or Organic Evolution. $500.
  • Charles S. Holt Memorial Scholarship. Student majoring in Aquatic Biology with a 3.0 gpa or higher. Extracurricular involvement on and off-campus will be considered, with preference given to students who have voluntered in activities related to Aquatic Biology. $700.
  • Rhonda Syverson Levinski Scholarship. Awarded to a junior or senior, majoring in Biology or Life Science, with a minimum 3.5 gpa. $800.
  • Robert Kramer Scholarship. Awarded to the Outstanding Student in Aquatic Biology. $600.
  • Edwin Nordheim Scholarship. Student must be a junior or senior majoring in Biology or a related pre-professional area. $600.
  • Harold T. Peters Scholarship. Student must be a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in Biology. $750.
  • Miriam Jaakola Savacheck Scholarship. Student must be a junior or senior, female student planning to enter medical school. $1000.
  • Mary Helen Tarter Scholarship. Awarded to the Outstanding Sophomore in Biology or Chemistry. This scholarship alternates with the Department of Chemistry. Biology. $600.
  • Spry Environmental Award. For a Native American Student, preferably in Biology or Environmental Studies, with a gpa of 2.5 or higher. Preference given to members of one of the seven Ojibwe tribes in Minnesota. $1000.
  • Patrick T. Trihey Science Teachers Scholarship. Awarded to a junior, senior, or returning senior with declared Life Science or Science major. Preference will be given to a student with a combined Life Science and Science major. $1000.
  • Julie Wegner Scholarship in Aquatic Biology. For a student majoring in Aquatic Biology with a minor and/or emphasis in Wetlands Ecology. $500.
