English Dept Language Competency for the MA in English

Foreign Language
* Candidates for the MA in English admitted after fall, 2004, must demonstrate a reading knowledge of a language other than English through successful completion of two years of college-level course work in the language, or by passing a second-year standardized language exam. Students whose first language is other than English may petition the Department for permission to use the native language to satisfy the competency requirement without testing or course work.

* Candidates for the MA in English admitted between spring, 2002, and fall 2004 may fulfill the language competency with a foreign language or either of the following. This option applies only to MS candidates admitted between spring, 2002 and fall, 2004.

Ph. D. programs usually have a foreign language requirement. Students considering pursuit of a Ph.D. are strongly encouraged to take the foreign language option.
