photoAdvice for Graduating BFA's

Graduating with a BFA in Creative and Professional Writing opens wide the professional and artisitic world to the lucky graduate. In studying both practical and creative uses of the English language, BFA graduates master the integration of both the right and left sides of the brain, therefore they can rise to the challenges of any life or occupational situation that confronts them, although they still may need help filling out Grad Plans.

Program Requirements

The BFA requires a total of 128 semester. All BSU graduates must have completed 67% of total credits attempted. Students who fall below this requirement must take additional credits in order to graduate. Please refer to the current catalog when registering for courses. Class requirements change periodically.

The Senior Project

The senior project is a portfolio of your work during your course of study in the BFA program and can include both revised and new material. Students complete the project in two sessions, usually taken in the fall and spring semesters of the senior year. Students will consult an adviser or another English Department faculty member to guide and oversee the progress of the project. Senior projects done by BFA Alumni can be viewed at the Writers Hole in the Wall in Hagg-Saur room 322.

Grad Plans

A requirement for all BSU graduates is the submission of Grad Planning Forms. These forms structure the details of your individualized program, including course requirements, and electives. Forms can be obtained online by following the link above, or at the Records and Registration Office in Deputy Hall. You should fill them out completely a year before you plan to graduate and approve them through your advisor.

Internships

Becoming an intern is a great way to "get your feet wet" in the working world before graduatuion. Recent BFA graduates have obtained jobs at national magazines and publishing companies after an internship. Contact Career Services or talk to an advisor to aid in the search. Internships can be found both in Minnesota and across the nation. English Department Internships are offered periodically.
