ENGL 1102: College Writing II.
3 credits.
Goals: On
completing College Writing II, students will be agile
and confident in meeting university-level demands for
writing; will be able to search for, locate, and select
appropriate print sources in the library; will be able
to make critical use of sources; will have read and
responded to works of literature; will be familiar with
and able to meet conventions of documentation in academic
writing; and will have met the Oral Component goals
for College Writing II (below).
- Students
will write academic exposition in a variety of rhetorical
modes.
- Students
will write 5 - 8 papers. Length may vary, but
students
will produce for grading at least 6,500 words during
the semester.
- At least
3 papers will make use of referenced sources culled
from library and other research, and be formally
documented.
At least one documented paper will be 7 or more pages
long.
- Readings
will include and may focus on literature, with the
instructor selecting from fiction, drama, poetry,
essay, and so on.
- Papers
will include responding to readings of literature,
essays, or other works.
- Students
will be instructed in library research methods (using
PALS, academic indexes, and so on).
- Students
will make at least one 7 - 10 minute oral presentation
from notes, followed by a question and answer period,
and/or participate in at least one group or panel
presentation (see Oral Component Goals Statement below).
Faculty
are encouraged to make use of in-class writing exercises
and day-to-day work, e.g. use of journals, drafts
and revisions, in-class responses to readings, listservs
or web-based discussions, and so on.
Use of the
Internet
At their
discretion, instructors may make use of the Internet
in keeping with the academic tenor of the first-year
writing courses. Uses may include
- locating
source materials on the Internet and the Web
- research
using public listservs, Usenet newsgroups, and personal
email exchange
- class-sponsored
listserv discussions or web-based conferencing
- class-sponsored
real-time discussions via IRC or the Web
- web-based
support for the course by making readings and other
materials available on the Web
Oral Component
Goals
ENGL 1102:
College Writing II: Students will engage in small-
and large-group guided discussion, with a focus on critical
thinking. Students will be instructed in selecting and
organizing material from their written works for longish
(7 -10 minute) oral presentations and/or group presentations.
Goal: Students
will be able to make a 7 - 10 minute prepared presentation
from notes and field questions from listeners, and/or
participate effectively in a group or panel presentation
followed by a group-led discussion or a question and
answer period.
