Course objectives which address the following

Required objectives for designated area (I)
1. to learn the writing processes of invention, organization, drafting, revision, editing and presentation;
2. to learn to participate effectively in groups with emphasis on listening, critical and reflective thinking, and responding;
3. locate, evaluate, and synthesize in a responsible manner material from diverse sources and points of view;
4. to learn to construct logical and coherent arguments;
5. learn to use authority, point-of-view, and individual voice and style in their writing and speaking;
6. to learn to employ syntax and usage appropriate to academic disciplines and the professional world.

Required general Liberal Education objectives
1. To promote student communication skills through (1) the writing process; (2) group and class discussion of student drafts and finished essays, literature, and model essays; and (3) class and group readings and discussions.
2. To promote higher order thinking skills through impromptu in-class writings and teacher-led discussion on critical response to writings; the writing process, class readings, including student drafts and finished essays, literature, and model essays; and critical response to own essays.
3. To promote recognition and understanding of values, and ability to articulate values through the personal and critical response to ethical concerns expressed in class readings, including student essays, literature and/or critical writings about culture and society, and model essays.

Identification of student assessment strategies
Students will be assessed for their success in writing expository critical and personal essays and papers, and their success in articulating critical and personal analysis of nonfiction essays, and literary texts. Assessment strategies will include writings and oral discussions.
