Freshman Writing FAQ

Experience is always the best teacher. The best way to find out about college writing courses is to experience them, but if you have questions or concerns here is a brief FAQ.

How does a University professor grade?
This naturally depends on the person doing the grading. A good college writing paper should demonstrate proper command of the fundamental elements of the English language. The usage of proper grammar, correct spelling, topic sentences, tenses, and unification of a work are all very important to a good paper.

I am worried that certain aspects of my writing are not on par with my peers. In other words, my grammar is terrible. How can I fix this?
Most of these problems are easily addressed and fixable. The most important step is taking time to proofread your work; it will greatly improve any writing. The Writing Resource Center also works to help improve student writing of any sort. Feel free to make an appointment or just stop in. Also, help is available via an external resource such as a grammar or writing handbook. If you still need help, you can email your professor before the due date and have them work with you to improve your writing skills.

Do you have any tips on how to make a good impression on my professors?
Yes, make sure to attend class and be on time. Finish all course work, reading included, on time. It also helps to participate in class and communicate with your instructor if you have any questions or concerns.

I am a student who takes distance education courses. Are college Writing Courses offered online?
We currently offer College Writing I online. We also offer computer intensive classes in the CAL Computer Classroom. These classes make use of online writing spaces. Check the catalog every semester for new offerings.

I have problems with typing and was wondering how I can fix this?
First off, it is called word processing. Typing refers to putting words on paper via type writers. Secondly, there are many books available to help aquaint students with the computer. We also offer courses that help introduce the computer.
