Bachelor of Fine Arts

Our BFA in Creative & Professional Writing is one of only 15 BFA’s in writing in the United States. In 2006, it won the MnSCU award for excellence in academic programming. More than half of Bemidji State English majors are now studying for this degree.

Write for the love of it! Write for a living! That’s how you will spend your time in the BFA program. We host workshops where you can hone your writing talent or learn how to translate your passion into a career. The BFA in writing at Bemidji is one of only fifteen in the United States. When you join the fastest growing program in the English Department, you join a community of “mine own kind” – Ezra Pound.

But what can you do, really, with a degree in writing?

A common myth many people hold is that an English degree pigeonholes you into teaching English as a career. This is not true. In fact, an English degree gives you great flexibility in career choices, like grant writing, marketing, and naturally, English education. The truth is, this is only the tip of the iceberg. The skills you’ll learn in the process of earning your English degree people are necessary in nearly all professions. Your choice of career is limited to only your imagination.

The BFA also prepares you for graduate study for a Master of Arts in English or a Master of Fine Arts in Writing. Our graduates have been accepted in many MFA programs including those at Bowling Green State University, Notre Dame University, the Iowa Writers Workshop, Rutger’s University, Emerson University and, of course, Bemidji State.
