Student Employment

All Theatre Program student positions are open to majors from any department. Payroll positions may be available in the described positions for an applicant with exceptional skills or experience. We will train students for work-study positions.


Job Description: Theatre Scene Shop (Wood Shop)

Experience working with saws and air tools and their maintenance is a plus, but we will train. Employees are also trained on how to safely use the stage rigging system. If you have ever worked construction or on a farm or ranch, you probably already have many of the skills needed. There are enough employees to distribute the need for any heavy lifting so not everyone has to be able to lift significant weights. This position requires attention to detail and the ability to follow verbal instructions. Although this position is primarily in the scene shop, there may be times that this crew works with the stage lighting crew. You must be able to work well with others or independently. Job Description: Lighting Shop

Stage Lighting Experience is a plus, but we will train. Some work is from ladders or a genie lift, but anyone who is uncomfortable with heights is not required to work off the floor. If you enjoy heights, this can be the job for you. There may be opportunities to run follow spots or the light board for events in the theatre. This position requires attention to detail and the ability to follow verbal instructions. You must be able to work well with others or independently. Although these positions are primarily in stage lighting, there may be times that this crew works with the scene shop crew. Job Description: Props Manager

Props are the various decorations used on stage sets and the items used by actors in performance. Finding the props for a show may involve a range of tasks from internet searches for visual images to pricing research, to creating a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. We will train but the position requires creativity, and self direction to meet deadlines without constant supervision. That means there is some flexibility in the work schedule. Job Description: Costume Shop

Costume mock-up drawingsCostume shop employee may be involved in sewing costumes from patterns or altering existing costumes to fit performers, or using craft materials to add decoration to basic costumes or create costume accessories. Experience sewing, tailoring, or altering clothing is desirable, but we will train interested students. During the three weeks of tech and production some people are needed to launder and iron costumes and prepare them for each rehearsal or performance. Between productions there will be activities organizing the costume shop and preparing pieces for rentals. This position requires attention to detail and the ability to follow verbal instructions. You must be able to work well with others or independently.

Job Description: Sound Design

Experience creating sound effects or musical compositions using digital programs and program software is required. This individual will also be asked to help train other students to use sound equipment. A primary task will be creating the sound designs for theatre productions, which means your work schedule has flexibility. You must be able to work well with others or independently. Job Description: Scene Painter

students painting a large scale background prop.Theatrical Scene painting uses many of the same techniques involved in studio art work but translated into a larger scale. You might also be involved in sculptural work creating scenic elements or properties, visual research for designs or working on scenic models and renderings. The amount of paint varies depending on where we are in the production process so the work schedule can be flexible. You must be able to work well with others or independently. Job Description: Graphic design and publicity

Student doing work on the computer.Experience with creating posters or artwork using graphic design software is required. This position may also write press releases or help coordinate advertising and publicity for productions. This offers a tremendous opportunity to expand your portfolio as a graphic designer or art major. You must be able to work well with others or independently. Job Description: House Manager

A house manager is essentially a host or hostess for the audience during performances. He or she interacts with patrons, supervises the ushers who seat patrons, and communicates with the production crew so they know when the audience is seated. We will train. If there is an emergency of any kind the house manager is expected to be able to follow provided instructions to ensure the safety of theatre patrons. The house manager must stay at the theatre from 30 minutes before the audience is seated until the show is over and then help lock up. Since this job is connected with the specific production dates it can allow stretches of time where the house manager is not required to work. It is also possible to combine some other obligations including creating lobby displays to provide work hours between productions. For some patrons the house manager is the only face of the theatre program so this job requires strong interpersonal communication skills and an even temperament. Job Description: Theatre Office

Office employees answer the phone, run the box office before performances, scan documents, and perform general clerical duties. This job requires knowledge of common computer software including Word and Excell. Photoshop experience is a plus. This job requires someone who can work independently after being given instructions. Preference will be given to a potential employee who has at least a schedule that allows work in three to 5 hour blocks in the afternoon and is available at least 3 days a week. Job Description: Rehearsal Stage Manager

The production stage manager who is responsible for the production once it opens is usually someone with some previous theatre experience. The rehearsal stage manager will share the work load with the production stage manager during the four to six week rehearsal period. Stage manager duties include preparing forms for auditions, documenting the actor’s movements through the rehearsal process, sweeping and mopping the stage before rehearsals if it is not clean, distributing schedules for rehearsals, finding rehearsal props, and facilitating communication between the cast, director and production team. The rehearsal stage manager will assist the production stage manager with these tasks during the rehearsal period including covering some rehearsals alone once training is complete. This position requires evening availability at least three week nights. You must be able to work well with others or independently. This position requires evening availability at least three week nights during the rehearsal period and for all technical rehearsals and performances.
