Concentrations
Electronic Media

This concentration deals with both theoretical and applied aspects of the electronic media. Included are courses on digital audio and video, audio and video performance, field and studio production, video directing, and engineering. A variety of media are addressed, including radio, television, cable, and satellite. Two student-run radio stations—one of which is streamed on the Web, a student-run television station, and the public television station for northern Minnesota offer ample opportunity for students to apply what they learn in classes.

Journalism/New Media

This concentration offers students exposure to print journalism, as well as work with the Internet. Courses include both print and Web writing, basic and computer-assisted reporting, both print and digital photography and photojournalism, and beginning and advanced Web site design. Students can apply what they learn in classes by working with the student-run newspaper.

Advertising/PR

This concentration prepares students for work in either advertising or public relations fields, as well as giving them some exposure to media marketing. Courses are available in both theoretical and applied aspects of advertising, design of both periodical and specialized publications, and public relations methods and cases. Internships with community and university organizations, as well as work in the university public relations office, offer students opportunities to put classroom knowledge to use.
