Originally from Brookings, South Dakota, Del Lyren is Professor of Trumpet at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minnesota. He presented a lecture on Conrad Gozzo at the ITG conference in Ft. Worth, as well as lectures presented throughout the world on Rafael Méndez, and recitals at the Euro-ITG conferences in Bad Sackingen, Germany and Kiev, Ukraine. Other guest artist appearances have taken him to England (London, York), Scotland (Edinburgh Fringe Festival), Sweden, Canada, and Mexico.

At BSU Lyren directs the
Red Line Swingers, Trumpet Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, and Brass Quintets. The Trumpet Studio has recently hosted many of the world’s best trumpet players, including Ed Tarr, Allen Vizzutti, Vince DiMartino, Joe Burgstaller, the Canadian Brass, Allan Dean, Niklas Eklund, Bobby Shew, Manny Laureano, Chuck Lazarus, Doug Carlsen, and Bob Dorer. The BSU Trumpet Ensemble opened for Allen Vizzutti at the 2004 International Trumpet Guild Conference in Denver, Colorado.

Dr. Lyren has performed with numerous orchestras throughout the United States, including the Phoenix Symphony, Phoenix Pops, Acadiana Symphony, Lake Charles Symphony, Rapides Symphony, Mesa Symphony, and Sun Cities Symphony. Each summer, he performs with the International Brass Quintet - the quintet-in-residence at the International Music Camp.

Lyren received his Bachelor of Arts degree from South Dakota State University where he studied with John Colson. After receiving his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from Arizona State University, where he studied with Anthony Plog and David Hickman, Magnificent Mendez was published by Summit Records. For many years, Lyren served on the Executive Staff of the International Trumpet Guild as the Membership Development and Retention Coordinator. Currently, Lyren oversees the ITG Young Artist Award and is a Yamaha Performing Artist.
