Dr. Erika Svanoe is Director of Bands at BSU and MusiCamp Director, and is responsible at BSU for the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, clarinet, pep band and Instrumental Conducting Course. Originally from Whitewater, Wisconsin, Dr. Svanoe earned her DMA in Conducting at the Ohio State University in 2009. Prior to her appointment at BSU, Dr. Svanoe was the Director of Athletic Bands at the University of New Hampshire. Craig Swartz graduate of Augustana College (Illinois) and Bemidji State University teaches instrumental music in the Des Moines Public Schools. A trumpeter in the Des Moines Symphony and trumpet instructor at Grinnell College, Mr. Swartz will assist with private lessons, sectionals and direct Jazz II.
Dr. Del Lyren is trumpet/horn instructor at camp and serves as Professor of High Brass at the BSU. Active in the International Trumpet Guild, he has performed in concerts in Sweden, Germany, England, Scotland, Mexico, Ukraine, Canada, and throughout the United States. He recently published method books on both trumpet and horn. Dr. Lyren is a graduate of South Dakota State University and Arizona State University.
Mr. Greg Gaston teaches the Music Technology curriculum at BSU. He is a TI:ME (Technology Institute for Music Educators) Level II certified music technology instructor. His specialties include sequencing, notation, electronic MIDI instrumental ensembles, digital media / recording, internet authoring and computer assisted instruction. He is also a music technology lab consultant and installer for SoundTree, (Korg USA).
Dr. Steven C. Konecne director of Jazz Studies at the MusiCamp and director of the MusiCamp Jazz Band, is a woodwind specialist with considerable experience as a professional musician. A graduate of North Texas State University and the University of Iowa, Dr. Konecne also directs the Bemidji Big Band.
Mr. Matthew Marsolek Associate Director of the Bemidji MusiCamp and an active trombonist in the region is Director of Bands at Pine River-Backus School District. Mr. Marsolek has worked at music camps throughout the United States including the Bands of America Summer Symposium.
Susan Nelson is the instructor of flute at Bemidji State University. She attended Chatham College in Pittsburgh, where she studied flute with David Tessmer and performed with the University of Pittsburgh Chamber Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony. Her graduate study continued with Betty and Roger Mather at the University of Iowa. Since coming to Bemidji in 1987, she has been a teacher, a performer in faculty chamber music recitals and with the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra, and an instructor in programs for the Region 2 Arts Council. She also has a special interest in flute recordings, and has published a book and several articles on the flute's recorded history.
