Dr. Joel Pugh is the Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Low Brass at Bemidji State University. He currently serves as the director for the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Chamber Winds at Bemidji State University. Pugh holds a D.M.A. from Michigan State University, a M.M. from Bowling Green State University, and a B.M. from Ithaca College. Previous teaching positions include Heidelberg College, Bowling Green State University, and Capital University.
His conducting career encompasses the wind band, brass band and chamber settings. Frequently called upon as a clinician for high school bands, he has worked with bands throughout the East coast and Midwest and was the conductor for the 2002 Minnesota Fine Arts Festival.
Dr. Pugh has appeared in concert settings at various universities including Louisiana State University, the Ohio State University, the University of Southern Mississippi, and McNeese State University. He recently served on the faculty for the Borealis Brass Congress at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
As a clinician, he has presented clinics at the Missouri and Ohio Music Educator’Äôs Professional Conferences. This coming December, he will present a clinic at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. His studies have been published in the TUBA Journal and The Brass Band Bridge.
Active as a performer on both euphonium and trombone, he has served as the principle euphonium in both the Cuyahoga Valley Brass Band and the Brass Band of Columbus, and has solo concerto appearances on recent CD releases of each ensemble. Pugh has also been featured as a soloist in numerous the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, numerous MENC conventions, the Gala Concert of the North American Brass Band Convention and the Great American Brass Band Festival, Danville, Kentucky. As a trombonist, he has performed in a variety of venues. Performances include several chamber recitals at several International Trombone Workshops and appearances with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and Toledo Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to serving on the board of directors for the North American Brass Band Association, Joel Pugh is an artist/clinician for the Boosey & Hawkes Company.
