Prospective and Current Prenursing Students
Now is a great time to be preparing for a career in the multifaceted field of professional nursing! A nursing shortage exists, especially for baccalaureate and masters prepared nurses.
You are at the right place to prepare to apply to the 4-year track if:
- You are a high school student who is exploring coming to BSU to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.
- You are considering applying to BSU as a transfer student to pursue a BSU baccalaureate degree in nursing.
- You are not presently a nurse. (If you are a nurse (RN) who wishes to prepare to complete a baccalaureate degree in nursing, please follow the links for the RN to baccalaureate degree track
BSU’s 4-year track leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. Ideally, freshman classes are completed on campus (or transferred in from another accredited college or university). We encourage students to take their preparatory work at BSU for the following reasons:
- BSU’s quality liberal arts and science faculty are helpful in connecting knowledge to “real world” conditions and problems. Students begin to think analytically which has implications for developing a global world-view and life-long learning patterns.
- Attending classes and studying with other health science students further contributes toward a strong knowledge base which you will integrate into the upper division academic experience.
- Developing relationships with other students preparing for our nursing program promotes a supportive community before you are enrolled in the nursing major.
- Students who successfully complete one year of full-time study may have preferential admission consideration upon application to the BSU 4-year track program.
Students selecting nursing as their premajor are required to take 2 nursing courses fall semester, sophomore year along with their other course work. During the fall semester (sophomore year), students desiring to be considered for selection into BSU’s 4-year track program make formal application to the major. Successful admission to the nursing major is required for enrollment in selected spring semester sophomore and all upper division nursing courses. Admission to the nursing major is competitive and limited. There are plans to admit 40 students the first time it is offered in 2008 and 50 students every year thereafter. (See “Admissions Process” and Application to Nursing Major” link).
