Nursing Career Ladder Options


Nursing is an occupation that offers a wide variety of job opportunities and career choices. Bemidji State University (BSU) Department of Nursing is a part of the Bemidji School of Nursing, which, along with Northwest Technical College (NTC), offers a stepladder educational mobility approach for students interested in nursing. So it will depend on your educational background where you begin your nursing program.

  3. Assessment or assessment waiver
  4. Official transcripts from colleges previously attended (to request credit transfer or apply for financial aid)

Admission Requirements:

  1. General college admission requirements must be met
  2. Assessment or assessment waiver(s) for reading, writing, and math
  3. TEAS Test (ATI test available at NTC. If taken at a different location, official transcript of score must be sent to NTC Admissions.)
  4. Official transcripts from colleges previously attended (to request credit transfer or apply for financial aid) 
  5. Nurse Assistant course completion
  6. Current CPR for Healthcare Providers Certification (maintained throughout program)

Northwest Technical College - 2-Year Generic

Pre-Admission Criteria
Admission Requirements:

  1. General college admission requirements must be met.

Northwest Technical College - LPN Step-In

Pre-Admission Criteria
Admission Requirements:

  1. General college admission requirements must be met.
  2. Course pre-requisites complete (see NTC website for course information
  3. Official transcripts from colleges previously attended (to request credit transfer or apply for financial aid)
  4. LPN Step Test (ATI test available at NTC. If taken at a different location, official transcript of score must be sent to NTC Admissions.)
  5. LPN licensure upon application
  6. Current CPR for Healthcare Providers Certification (maintained throughout program)

Bemidji State University - RN to BS

Pre-Admission Criteria
Admission Requirements - Applicants Must:

  1. Be a graduate of a state approved associate degree or diploma nursing program.
  2. Be licensed to practice as a registered nurse or be a graduate with license pending.
  3. Be formally admitted to Bemidji State University. 
  4. Submit a completed Department of Nursing Application Form.
  5. Submit current RN license number for verification.

Bemidji State University - 4-Year Track

Pre-Admission Criteria
Admission to BSU

Application to the major:
For Admission consideration, applicants must have completed at least 30 semester credits from an accredited college or university including the designated required non-nursing courses listed below:

  • BIOL 1110 Human Biology - 4 credits
  • PSY 1100 Introduction to Psychology - 4 credits
  • PSY 3237 Lifespan Development - 4 credits
  • BIOL 2110 Human Anatomy & Physiology - 5 credits
  • CHEM 1111 General Chemistry I with lab - 4 crdits

Applicants will be prioritized according to:

  1. Students who start at BSU (do not transfer more than 24 credits) and
    declare their major as NRS4 in the first semester
  2. All other students
