My teaching philosophy is that students learn from each other with the guidance of the teacher. My role is to provide students with the foundation needed for them to develop their individual ideas and to form their own opinions. I use a combination of different technologies, practical application discussions, and critical thinking activities to encourage them to grow and develop as caring, assertive professionals.
I graduated from GrandView College in Des Moines, Iowa in 1991 with my BSN. I was a staff nurse at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in the Telemetry/ICU unit for two years. After that, I worked as a school nurse at Valley High School in West Des Moines, Iowa. My family and I moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1995. I continued working as a school nurse at Lincoln High School and at Joe Foss Alternative High School. In my role as a school nurse, I had the opportunity to develop several programs including a program for pregnant and parenting teens, and a program for smoking cessation for students. I began working on my Master's in Nursing at Augustana College in 1998 and graduated in 2002. In 2001, I began working as a teacher at Augustana where I was involved in the school nursing curriculum. I began my doctoral work at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska in 2004 and transferred to South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota in 2006 so I could study with my mentor, Dr. Sandra Bunkers. I will defend my dissertation on October 15, 2009. My dissertation was a qualitative study of the urban dwelling American Indian population.
My research interest is in global health and indigenous populations. I have traveled to Europe, China, Hong Kong, and Australia. I recently received permission from the Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council to conduct a study with the Aboriginal population in Redfern, Sydney, Australia. I will be returning to Australia to conduct my research sometime next year.
I am very enthused about teaching at Bemidji State. My colleagues are exciting, very helpful, and fun. The students are energetic and dedicated. It's a pleasure to be here.
