General Information

Order of Classes

  • Students should take classes in numerical order when possible. (see Suggested semester schedules)

Recommended Liberal Education Classes:

  • The department of PEHS recommends the following liberal education classes for Exercise Science majors:
    • PHED 1890 Lifetime Fitness (Category 11)
    • PHED 2200 Lifestyle for Wellness (Category 9)

General Course Information

  • PHED 2100 Foundations of Physical Education is offered during the Fall Semester only and should be taken during the first fall in attendance.
  • HLTH 2100 Community First Aid is a requirement of this major.  Students with Red Cross certifications in First Aid, Adult CPR, Child CPR, and Infant CPR may have the Community First Aid requirement waived, but students must still have the TOTAL NUMBER OF CREDITS in the major to graduate.
  • BIOL 1110 or BIOL 1211 (for biology majors) with the lab is REQUIRED.  BIOL 1211 or BIOL 1212 is NOT REQUIRED for this major.
  • ALL Physical Education majors are REQUIRED to satisfy an aquatics elective.  The minimum level of proficiency needed to meet the requirement is PHED 1116 Swimmers.  Students not skilled in swimming should begin working on the swimming requirement EARLY in the career; begin with PHED 1114 Beginning Swimming or PHED 1115 Intermediate Swimming.  It is recommended that students with good swimming skills pursue PHED 2640 Water Safety Instructor.
  • Physical Education Majors are REQUIRED to take PHED 3300 Physiology of Exercise and Nutrition NOT PHED 2600 Sport Physiology.  Physical Education Majors pursuing a COACHING SPECIALIST can waive PHED 3090 Sport Physiology.  (This is also true for Physical Education minors who pick PHED 3300 Physiology of Exercise and Nutrition as one of their Theory Electives.)
  • PHED teaching methods courses should be taken in sequence as much as possible.  Physical Education majors should enroll in the teaching methods courses after they have taken PHED 2100 Foundations of Physical Education and some of the 3000 level PHED major foundation courses, such as PHED 3100 Motor Development, PHED 3110 Motor Learning, PHED 3200 Introduction to Sport Biomechanics, PHED 3300 Physiology of Exercise and Nutrition.

Department of Professional Education Requirements

  • The PPST should be taken after the student’s freshman year or early in their sophomore year.  Students must take the PPST before they are allowed to register for classes in the Department of Professional Education. Students may sign up for the PPST in Sanford Hall.
  • Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 in order to be allowed to register for classes in the Department of Professional Education.

Teaching Licensure/Graduation Requirements

  • Health Education majors must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 for all classes, a minimum GPA of 2.5 in their major, and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 in Professional Education at the time of graduation to receive teaching licensure.

Graduation Planning Documents

  • PEHS students should submit GRADUATION PLANNING DOCUMENTS when they have completed 80 semester hours of degree coursework.
