MTLE Policy Change, October 22, 2013

Students entering Professional Education are required to take all parts of the MTLE Basic Skills Test in order to register for Education Courses.

Students are not required to pass the MTLE Basic Skills Tests in order to complete their Education degree. The Minnesota Department of Education requires passing scores on all sections of the MTLE Basic Skills, Pedagogy and Content Area Tests before they will issue full-time teaching licenses.

Professional Education will be sending out a letter (in the next two weeks) to students who are not currently enrolled in Education courses as a result of the previous policy. This letter will allow the department to gather information to help prepare for the influx of students.

Please contact Aspen Easterling, Advising Coordinator, with any questions regarding this policy change.

The building, built in 1950 and renovated in 1986, has been renamed Bensen Hall in a ceremony on Friday, Sept. 28, in honor of former president M. James “Jim” Bensen. Bensen was BSU’s eighth president from 1994-2001 and is the only BSU alumnus to serve as president.

During Bensen’s tenure, BSU received national reaccreditation effort by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education and was integrated into the MnSCU system. The A.C. Clark Library was renovated and remodeled and funding for construction of the American Indian Resource Center was secured during his term as president, as well.

BSU Involved in Preparing Teachers for B/VI Certification (Posted 2011)

Five Minnesota universities (Bethel, Bemidji, Duluth, Moorhead and St. Cloud) collaborate to provide a graduate level license preparation program to prepare teachers of Minnesota students who are blind or visually impaired. This program was launched in 2003 and is currently preparing its third cohort of students. We also maintain a list of persons interested in Cohort IV, which probably will begin coursework in spring semester 2011.

The Minnesota Collaborative Preparation Program for Teachers of the Blind or Visually Impaired has a webpage on the Metro ECSU website. This is the link to the BVI teacher preparation webpage: http://www.mnlowincidenceprojects.org/iheresources.html. This page includes basic information about the program.
