Bensen Hall Dedication
On Friday, Sept 28, Bemidji State’s Education-Arts Building received a new name.
The building, built in 1950 and renovated in 1986, has been renamed Bensen Hall in a ceremony on Friday, Sept. 28, in honor of former president M. James “Jim” Bensen. Bensen was BSU’s eighth president from 1994-2001 and is the only BSU alumnus to serve as president.
During Bensen’s tenure, BSU received national reaccreditation effort by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education and was integrated into the MnSCU system. The A.C. Clark Library was renovated and remodeled and funding for construction of the American Indian Resource Center was secured during his term as president, as well.
The Minnesota Board of Teaching has granted continuing approval for Bemidji State University to offer teacher licensure for program 8710.3320 Middle Level Math Endorsement for grades 5-8.
We are pleased to announce that the Department of Professional Education has updated its website to provide a more user-friendly format. We realize that change often requires an adjustment in thinking. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with this new format and give us feedback concerning any of the improvements.
Students entering the Professional Education program will be required to take all parts of the basic skills test (Pre-Professional Skills Test/Praxis I or MTLE) prior to registration for any Education course. Documentation that the student took the basic skills test must be provided for verification. Acceptable documentation includes score reports, testing center verification, or scores entered in the student information system.
Students entering the Professional Education program will be required to have passing scores on the basic skills tests at the end of their second semester in their education program. If the student does not have passing scores at the end of the second semester, the student will not be allowed to proceed further with education courses until passing scores are documented.
Students must have passing scores on the basic skills test to register for student teaching.
Five Minnesota universities (Bethel, Bemidji, Duluth, Moorhead and St. Cloud) collaborate to provide a graduate level license preparation program to prepare teachers of Minnesota students who are blind or visually impaired. This program was launched in 2003 and is currently preparing its third cohort of students. We also maintain a list of persons interested in Cohort IV, which probably will begin coursework in spring semester 2011.
The Minnesota Collaborative Preparation Program for Teachers of the Blind or Visually Impaired has a webpage on the Metro ECSU website. This is the link to the BVI teacher preparation webpage: http://www.mnlowincidenceprojects.org/iheresources.html. This page includes basic information about the program.
