The M.S. Degree program is a terminal-degree program for people interested in training for careers in the helping professions. This program is designed to allow a student to develop a professional identity as a counselor so that he or she can work in a variety of settings. It is designed to prepare students for licensure as Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCC) in Minnesota. It is also appropriate for those preparing for entry into a doctoral program. There is an internship opportunity for all graduate students. Students going for LPC or LPCC licensure are required to have 700 hours of internship, 100 in Practicum and 600 in Internship.

The program is flexible enough to provide some direction for students interested in going to a variety of careers:

  1. LPCs can work in higher education in the areas of student services and student development, in various human services settings, and in private practice.
  2. LPCCs can work in the same areas as LPCs, and also in mental health centers, psychiatric hospitals, and other areas where they serve as mental health providers.
  3. Graduate Students wanting to work in Higher Education: Residential Life, Admissions, Career Services, and other Student Activities without pursuing the licensure options.
  4. Graduate Students wishing to work in career/vocational counseling services.
  5. Area Professionals wishing to upgrade their licensures.
  6. Graduate Students preparing for doctoral work
