Graduate Program

BSU offers an M.S. in Counseling Psychology, which prepares people for careers as counselors and psychotherapists.  The program has been designed to allow a student to develop a professional identity that can translate to a variety of counseling settings.  The program is flexible enough to support careers in higher education for students wanting to work on college campuses in career services, advising centers, residential life and student unions.

License

Students are prepared to be eligible for license as Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) in Minnesota.

Careers

The program is flexible enough to provide some direction for students interested in going to a variety of careers:

  • Higher education. Graduates may work in the areas of student services and student development, in various human services settings, and in private practice.
  • Mental Health. Graduates work in mental health centers, psychiatric hospitals, and other areas where they serve as mental health providers.
  • Career/Vocational Counseling.
  • Doctoral work. An MS in Counseling Psychology is also appropriate for those preparing for entry into a doctoral program.

Employment

MSCP is a young program.  We have graduated five students.  Three of the five are currently employed professionals as career counselors, therapists in mental health centers and clinics, and as children's therapists.  One of them is in a doctoral program in child clinical, and the last one is seeking entry into a doctoral program in clinical psychology.

Two of our current students have acquired jobs even while in graduate school.  One works with Upward Bound as a counselor and the other is a counselor with the Advising Success Center.  In addition, eleven of our current students are employed as Graduate Assistants across campus and are providing a high level of work to the University.

With the new license, the future is bright for students in Counseling Psychology.
