B.A.S. in Applied Engineering
FAQs
Q: What types of classes do I take?
A: You will typically be taking both major classes and Liberal Education classes. Major classes will cover a variety of engineering themed classes covering a variety of engineering activities found in industry, in such areas as cost analysis, modeling, production planning and control, engineering design and quality. Refer to the BAS in Applied Engineering degree planning sheet and the Basic Degree Requirements page for a list of degree course requirements. Depending on your previous degree work, you may also need to complete Liberal Education requirements in areas such as the sciences, oral and written communication, and humanities.
Q: Will I receive credit for my previous college course work?
A: The program is designed as a “2 + 2” program to articulate courses and degree completed at a community and technical college with a four-year degree. Up to 26 technical credits from A.S., A.A.S., diploma and certificate programs can be substituted as a block for the Required Applied Engineering Technology Core. Up to 17 additional technical electives can be used to meet the Free Elective requirements of the degree. Any liberal education courses completed at a MnSCU school as part of the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum can be applied toward Liberal Education requirements.
Q: What types of careers will the B.A.S. in Applied Engineering prepare me for?
A: This degree will provide you for a wide range of careers in business and industry that require engineering applications in materials, processes and development of new systems and products. Employers are interested in hiring graduates of the Applied Engineering Program because they have a combination of in-depth technical background and knowledge in broad engineering applications.
Q: Do I have to come to Bemidji State University to attend classes and complete my degree? How can I complete the degree if I am working full time, and do not live in the Bemidji area?
A: All of the course work in the major is available via the world wide web. You will not be required to attend classes on campus unless you wish to do so. Most Liberal Education course work is also available through the web from Bemidji State University. Minnesota community/technical colleges also offer both on-campus and web-based liberal education courses.
Q: What type of a computer and internet access do I need to access and participate in my classes?
A: For most courses, there are no special computer requirements other than basic word processing and access to the internet. Dial-up internet connections will work satisfactorily; high speed connections are recommended if available.
Q: How long will it take me to complete my degree?
A: It is possible to complete the major course work in 2-3 years. Courses in the Applied Engineering Program are scheduled on a part-time basis, meaning that 2-3 major courses will be offered each semester(Off-Campus Master Course Schedule). This schedule is designed to accommodate individuals who are working full-time while they are completing degree work. Students decide how many classes they wish to take any given semester based on their work and personal commitments. Students who need to complete Liberal Education course may require additional time.
Q: How are courses offered, what are they like?
A: Specific course delivery will vary between courses and instructors. Web-based delivery requires more responsibility from the student in completing assignments and meeting deadlines. Much of the coursework will be completed independently by the student, with resources and the professor available through email for assistance. Courses may include a variety of real time chats (typically scheduled in the evenings), posted discussion boards, and home web pages with assignments, schedules, references and resources. (Off-Campus Course Delivery)
Q: How do I order textbooks?
A: Textbooks will be posted with upcoming course information. It is the responsibility of the student to order their own textbooks, at what ever location they choose. The bookstore on campus can be reached at: BSU Bookstore, (218)755-1660.
Q: How much will the tuition cost?
A: Tuition rates fluctuate each semester. For the current tuition rate, please see (tuition link). Many employers also offer tuition reimbursement programs for their employees, so check with your employer about this benefit.
