Career and Technical Education (Vocational Education) prepares people for careers in education, the trades, industry, and related occupations. The Career and Technical Education program at Bemidji State University trains career and technical education instructors for secondary and post-secondary teaching positions. Career and Technical Education majors must have prior work experience in the field they wish to teach in, and credits may be awarded for that experience.
In Career and Technical Education, theories and other philosophical approaches to education are taught in the context of practical experience. For example, students who wish to teach in the construction area will already have work experience in that area. In the Career and Technical Education program, that experience is combined with teaching methodologies to prepare a qualified teacher. Career and Technical Education licensure requires a combination of technical competency and some related work experience. Individuals should consult with an advisor to determine the specific requirements for their field.
The Center for Career & Technical Education offers several education options for teachers and administrators at the post-secondary level. For individuals wishing to pursue a 4-year degree, BSU provides an excellent opportunity for their work experience and previous technical coursework if it relates to their teaching or administrative position. The B.S. in Career & Technical Education (B.S. CTE) has special features which recognize both related work experience and previous related technical college coursework. Individuals with a 1-year technical college diploma may transfer up to 16 technical credits, and an individual with an A.A.S. degree may transfer up to 32 technical credits into the B.S degree program.
Similarly, up to 32 credits may be transcripted into the degree from 3 years of related occupational experience. Less experience can be prorated. Utilizing the maximum of technical coursework and related work experience, ½ of the credits (64 of 128) required for graduation may already be earned. The balance of the requirements for a B.S. degree include Liberal Education requirements ( 42 credits at BSU or 40 credits as part of the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum), required courses for the major (18 credits), plus free electives to reach a minimum total of 128 credits. Many courses, including Liberal Education and Major , are available through a variety of distance delivery modes (ITV, web and self-guided). Refer to the CTE B.S. Post-secondary Degree Plan Sheet for more information. Consult an advisor for specific details on how to complete the degree.
