How and where are courses offered?
Career and Technical Education courses [including the Teacher Education Series(TES) courses] and Work-Based Learning courses are offered either in a web-based format or Interactive Television (ITV) format.
Web-based courses are available anywhere that has a computer with an internet connection.
ITV format courses are generally broadcast to 3 sites throughout northern Minnesota. These sites vary from course to course. The courses are also available at BSU as the host site. Site locations are included on the course schedule page.
How do Interactive Television (ITV) and Web courses differ from on-site courses?
ITV courses are often very similar to face-to-face classes. Students and the instructor typically meet regularly, and can see and hear each other in real time. Web courses are more self-guided, placing more responsibility for successful course completion on the student. Most work is done on the student’s schedule. Depending on the course and instructor, there may or may not be Chat Rooms that are scheduled for participation by the student. Chats are usually scheduled on evenings or weekends.
What are the tuition costs?
For the most current distance learning tuition rates and fees contact the Bemidji State University, Center for Extended Learning (CEL) at 218-755-2068, or 1-800-475-2001.
Are courses available at the graduate level?
All of the Teacher Education Series and Work-Based Learning Courses, with the exception of IT 4830 – Introduction to Career & Technical Education, are offered at both undergraduate and graduate level.
Courses from both of the Teacher Education Series and Work-Based Learning can be used as electives in a graduate degree in the Department of Industrial Technology. Check out the graduate program at http://www.bemidjistate.edu/graduatestudies/.
What are the licensing requirements for teaching technical programs at high school or 2 year colleges?
For high school, an individual will ultimately need a 4-year degree, courses in education, and documentation of technical expertise in the area that they would wish to teach. See http://www.bemidjistate.edu/it/cte/careerTechEd_Secondary.htm for Minnesota State Teaching License requirements in Career & Technical Education.
For teaching in a technical/community college, an individual needs to complete the Teacher Education Series of Courses (TES) listed at http://www.bemidjistate.edu/it/cte/teachered.htm, and have technical expertise in the area they wish to teach. Additional MnSCU licensing requirements should be reviewed at http://education.state.mn.us/mde/Teacher_Support/Educator_Licensing/index.html.

It is available at http://www.bemidjistate.edu/records/forms/TransferSubstituteCourseEquivalency.pdf).
