Darren Olson (Chair)
Dr. Darren Olson is Assistant Professor in the Department of Technological Studies. He is a graduate from Indiana State University, where he earned a Ph.D. in Technology Management, with a specialization in Quality Management Systems. He is also a graduate from Bowling Green State University, earning a M.Ed. in Career and Technology Education, and from Brigham Young University with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. In addition to education courses, he teaches courses in CADD, and materials and processes. Dr. Olson’s current research interests are in the areas of service quality and organization-level quality management. He is currently a member of the National Association of Industrial Technology (NAIT) and the American Society for Quality (ASQ).

William Brauer
Dr. William M. Brauer, CSIT is a Professor of Technological Studies. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at Purdue University. His areas of study were Curriculum and Instruction, Graduate Education, Technological Studies, and Industrial Engineering. His master’s degree is Master of Technological Studies, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio. He holds an Associate of Science degree in Electro/Mechanical Robotics and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.
Dr. Brauer is active in the National Association of Industrial Technology (NAIT). Currently, he is the electronic editor of the Journal of Technological Studies and holds certification as Certified Senior Industrial Technologist (CSIT). His interests are in quality, assessment, and leadership. He is recognized by Epsilon Pi Tau with the Prestigious Laureate Prospectus for achievement, leadership, management, professional and public relations for professionals and exemplary service.

Barb Hanus
Barbara Hanus is the Coordinator of the Design Technology Program and has
been teaching in the Design Tech program at Bemidji State University for
over 20 years. Her teaching responsibilities currently involve 3-D computer
modeling and animation, multimedia production for CD/DVD/web delivery and
the professional culmination courses. She is also responsible for the
articulation relationships with the MnSCU 2-year Design related programs.
Ms. Hanus has an A.A.S from Moorhead Technical College in Commercial Art
along with a B.S. in Technological Studies Education and a B.S. in
Vocational Education from Minnesota State University-Moorhead. Barbara was
the first female IT Education graduate from MSU-Moorhead. She was the second
female IT Education graduate in Minnesota. She also has the unique title as
the first female president of the professional fraternity in the United
States. Barbara also has over 10 years of industrial experience as an Art
Director of an advertising agency, an Art Director of the television
station, sign painting, screen print artist and print production and sales.

Bonnie Higgins
Bonnie Higgins is currently an Assistant Professor in the Technological Studies department. She teaches Design Technology courses including: Digital Video, Photographic and Electronic Imaging, and Technical Foundations.
Ms. Higgins also contributes to the department by teaching courses in the Master of Science and Bachelor of Applied Science in Technological Studies.
Before becoming an Assistant Professor at BSU, Ms. Higgins taught as an adjunct faculty member at Minnesota West Community and Technical College in Worthington, Minnesota and as a middle school art instructor in the Worthington school district. She began her career in education in 1987.
Ms. Higgins is currently working on her Ph.D. at the University of North Dakota.

Kathy Jackson
Kathy Jackson is the Assistant to the Director, Center for Career & Technical Education. She is the individual responsible for working with individuals to acquire secondary Career and Technical Education Licensure or their Teacher Coordinator of Work-Based Learning Licensure. Kathy graduated in 1985 from Bemidji State University with a degree in Vocational Education. Kathy taught for 5 years at the Technical College in East Grand Forks. She has also worked as Minnesota Department of Labor’s field representative for Youth Apprenticeship.

Jim McCracken
Dr. James McCracken is Professor in the Department of Technological Studies, serving as Director of the Bemidji State University Center for Career and Technical Education and as Academic Coordinator for Distance Delivery of the B.A.S. in Technology Management. He has taught courses in technology education, design technology and industrial technology, and currently has instructional duties which include professional education courses. Jim earned his B.S. and M.S. in Industrial Education from U- W Stout and his Ed.D in Technology, Career, Technical & Adult Education from Texas A&M. Jim has held many leadership and professional positions, including Minnesota Technology Education Assn. President, International Technology Education for Children Council President, and a member of the International Technology Education Assn. Board of Directors. He has also presented both nationally and internationally, and has authored many articles and served as editor for professional publications.

Tim Brockman
Tim Brockman is presently an assistant professor in the Department of Technological Studies. He brings a vast construction and educational background to the classroom with experience as a licensed general contractor, land developer and adult educator. His teaching assignments include the Construction Management courses along with Separating – Woods, Industrial Safety, and Production Management. He also works with students in the Master of Science program.
Mr. Brockman is currently writing his dissertation for his Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education at the University of North Dakota.

Mark Schmit
Mark Schmit is currently an Associate Professor in the Technological Studies Department. He teaches Design Technology courses including: Design Management, Exhibit Design and Senior Project.
Dr.Schmit has a B.S. and M.S Degree in Technology Education from the University of Wisconsin and a Doctorate Degree from the University of Minnesota in Technical and Vocational Education
Mark has Owned and operated businesses including Schmit Prototypes, Technical Development Incorporated, The Land Office and UZI RND. Boating and traveling are his main passions that help focus his thoughts on design.

David Kingsbury
Dr. David Kingsbury is Professor in the Department of Technological Studies and serves as the Executive Director of Corporate and Educational Relations at Bemidji State University. Responsibilities include the identification, development and implementation of strategic projects for the University and the Centerfor Research and Innovation. Duties in instruction have ranged from teaching courses in the Department of Technological Studies, the Center for Career and Technical Education as well as corporate training and research responsibilities for companies across the Upper Midwest of the United States. Recent work has focused upon the design and implementation of articulated programs between Bemidji State University and institutions of higher education using distance education technology on the state, regional and international level. Doctoral work at the University of Minnesota involved action research on programs within vocational education and productivity enhancement.

Vince Vohnout
Dr. Vohnout joined the faculty of Department of Technological Studies as an Associate Professor in 2006. He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University. His undergraduate studies were also in Mechanical Engineering at Cleveland State University’s Fenn College of Engineering. Before entering academia as a Professor, Dr. Vohnout co-founded Adaptive Machine Technologies (AMT), an engineering research and development company in Columbus Ohio. He served as the president of AMT for the first nine years of its existence before returning to his studies at OSU. Dr. Vohnout is also a licensed Professional engineer in Ohio and continues in his private consulting and research practice when not busy with his academic responsibilities at BSU. Dr. Vohnout’s research interests are currently centered in high-energy rate, high velocity forming of sheet metal components.

Randy Wentzel
Randy Wentzel is currently an Assistant Professor in the Technological Studies Department. He teaches Materials and Processes/Separating, Fluid Power, Mechanical Power, Performance Measurement, Industrial Maintenance and Safety,
Engineering Problem Solving and Advanced Machining.
Randy also contributes to the department and to the students by being the advisor to the SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers) Club. The club helps students explore the world of manufacturing and related career opportunities.
Randy has earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees at Bemidji State University in the field of Industrial Education. He has spent the past 25 years working in industry for several companies and has held various engineering and management positions. He had taught as an adjunct faculty member in the department for 10 years prior to accepting a full time position in 2005.

Gerald Nestel
Dr. Gerald Nestel (Bud) is Associate Professor in the Department of Technological Studies. He is a graduate of the University of Arkansas, where he earned an EdD in 1969. He also graduated from Southern Illinois University, earning a MS in Ed. in 1963, and a BS from University of Wisconsin at Stout 1962. He has taught in higher education at Southern Illinois University, Eastern Illinois University, Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD, thirty-one years at St. Cloud State University, one year at Black Hills State University, SD, and since 2005 at Bemidji State University. Dr. Nestel has responsibilities related to the Prototype Engineering program and model making. In addition, he teaches courses in CADD, CNC, PLTW and design. He is currently an active member of the Association of Professional Model Makers (APMM) and the International Technology Education Association (ITEA.)

Andrew Graham

Sharon Russell (Office and Adminstrative Specialist Intermediate)
Sharon Russell is the Office and Administrative Specialist – Intermediate of the Technological Studies Department. She has been with BSU since 2002. Prior to working at BSU, she was employed with the Minnesota State Lottery in Detroit Lakes for eleven years. Sharon is married with three children and one grand-child and loves the Bemidji area. Outside of working with the faculty and staff at BSU, she and her husband enjoy fishing, boating, gardening and ride their motorcycle any chance they can get.

Bob Viktoria (General Maintenance Worker)
Bob Viktora is currently the General Maintenance Worker in Bridgeman Hall at BSU. He has been employed at BSU since 1997. Prior to working at BSU Bob was with AmeriPride Linen. He enjoys working with the faculty, staff and students and is looking forward to the next phase of the development of the Center for Advanced and Emerging Technologies. In his spare time, Bob enjoys hunting, fishing and gardening.
