B.S. in Career & Technical Education - Secondary Education Track
Career and Technical Education (Vocational Education) prepares people for careers in education, the trades, industry, and related occupations. The Career and Technical Education program at Bemidji State University trains career and technical education instructors for secondary and post-secondary teaching positions. Career and Technical Education majors may have prior work experience in the field they wish to teach in, and credits may be awarded for that experience.
In Career and Technical Education, theories and other philosophical approaches to education are taught in the context of practical experience. For example, students who wish to teach in the construction area will already have work experience in that area. In the Career and Technical Education program, that experience is combined with teaching methodologies to prepare a qualified teacher. Career and Technical Education licensure requires a combination of technical competency and some related work experience. Individuals should consult with an advisor to determine the specific requirements for their field.
Note: Students interested in teaching career and technical education who do not yet have work experience may consider a Bachelor of Science degree in Technology Education. (Contact the Department of Technological Studies.) The Bachelor of Science in Career and Technical Education does not meet licensure requirements for secondary school teaching in technology education or business education.
