Design Technology at Bemidji State University is a unique applied design program that integrates the excitement of design and illustration with the knowledge and control of digital imaging technology and production. Design Technology is an innovative interdisciplinary program integrating Technological Studies, Visual Arts, and Mass Communication courses. All Design Technology majors must maintain a 2.75 overall GPA to continue to register for program related courses.
The Design Technology program has an Advisory Board whose role is to review program /curriculum issues, report trends in employment requirements and discuss the impact of future design and communication technologies. The Design Technology Advisory Board has membership that includes over 45 regional, national and international design related companies from across the United States. With the Advisory Board's professional insight, the foundation of the curriculum continues to balance an understanding of functional design with the recognition of industry standards.
Coursework production assignments mirror real-world design and production requirements. From the beginning, students are involved in the production management aspects of design. Through production logs, students document the time involved in each step of their design and production processes. Students then price out each production assignment and learn about how to design within a time frame and budget. Students also serve a hands-on internship with the industry with many internships leading to permanent positions after graduation.
There are three options for specializations within Design Technology: Digital Design/Electronic, Digital Design/Print, and Exhibit Design. Bemidji State University is recognized as the only university in the United States with a 4-year degrees with a specialization in Exhibit Design.
