Frequently Asked Questions

Use the questions below to learn more about registering for classes at Bemidji State University. If your questions are not addressed here, contact Extended Learning at 218-755-2068, 1-800-852-7422 or cel@bemidjistate.edu. We will be happy to answer all of your questions.

I don't know my BSU ID number. How do I get it?

Your BSU ID number is the 8-digit number on the front of your BSU Student ID. If you do not have a student ID, you can call 218-755-2020 or stop by the Records Office to get your BSU ID Number.

If you would like a BSU Student ID card, you can come to campus and stop by the Information Desk in the Hobson Memorial Union to request a picture ID, or contact Extended Learning by phone at 1-800-852-7422, or via email cel@bemidjistate.edu and request a "Distance Education ID" without a picture.

I don't know or can't remember my PIN number. How can I find out what it is?

Your PIN number is originally set to your birth date in one of two formats. If you were admitted to BSU after 4/20/98, it will be in YYMMDD format. If you were admitted to BSU prior to 4/20/98, it will be in DDYY format. You will be prompted to change your PIN number once you access the registration system. If you have changed your PIN number and cannot remember it, you can request it in person with a picture ID, or by sending or faxing a signed request to the Records Office. You may also call the Records Office to have your PIN number reset to it's original birth date format.

When I enter my BSU ID and PIN numbers, I get the message "Invalid Login ID/PIN entered". What should I do?

You have entered an incorrect ID or PIN number. Check your numbers and try again. If you continue to have problems, contact the Records Office.

Where do I get an Advisor Access Code?

Degree-seeking students will need an Advisor Access Code, which are randomly assigned codes specific to each student each semester (summer session registration does not require Advisor Access Codes). Students need to get their code each semester from their advisor.

When I try to register for a class, I get an error message that I have a "Hold". What should I do?

There will be a message stating what type of hold you have.

  • Business Office Hold: Contact the Cashier's Office, Deputy 202, or call 218-755-2046 for clarification of the financial hold and instructions on what you must do to have the hold removed.
  • Responsible Men, Responsible Women Hold: Contact the Office of the Director of Student Life and Counseling in Sanford Hall, or call 218-755-2075 for information on the RMRW workshops.
  • Health Services Hold: Submit evidence of current immunization records to Health Services in Birch Hall or call 218-755-2053 for more information.

When I try to register for a class, I get an error message that a student program is required. What does this mean?

This means you are trying to register for a course that requires you to be admitted to a certain program, such as Professional Education, Graduate Studies, or Extended Learning. Please contact the appropriate department for information on criteria for being admitted to the program.

How do I obtain permission to register for a course that is full or requires instructor permission?

Contact the instructor of the course to request permission to add. If permission is granted, the instructor will do an override on the registration system. Once the override has been done, you must then add the course through the registration system.

I would like to audit a course or take it as P/NP, but the registration system won't let me. What should I do?

In order to change the grading method for a course, you will need to submit an academic petition or letter to the Records Office by the deadline each semester. Courses required for your major, minor, emphasis, or liberal education requirements must be taken for a letter grade. Please refer to the undergraduate catalog for other restrictions that may apply.

How do I obtain permission to take an overload of credits?

You are restricted from taking more than 18 credits if your GPA is less than 3.00. Contact your advisor to request permission to have this restriction waived. If permission is granted, your advisor will do an override on the registration system. Once the override has been done, you may then register for more than 18 credits.

How do I obtain permission to drop a course?

Drops can be done on the registration system (see academic calendar for last day to drop). Instructor permission is not required to drop a course.

I am unable to drop a course due to a Business Office Hold. What can I do?

Contact the Cashier's Office at Deputy 202, or by calling 218-755-2046 for clarification of the financial hold and instructions on what you must do to have the hold removed.
