Admission to the DLiTE program follows a four-step process:

  • Step 1 - Fulfill Prerequisites
  • Step 2 - Submit Application Materials (Details and Forms Below)
  • Step 3 - Application Review by DLiTE Program Manager
  • Step 4 - Application Review by Bemidji State University

Step 1 - Fulfill Prerequisites

Prior to applying to the DLiTE program, you must have:
  • Completed at least an Associate of Arts degree, a Minnesota Transfer Curriculum, or a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree.
  • Taken the PRAXIS I: Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) or the Computer-Based Academic Skill Assessment. Contact Educational Testing Service for information. Although the PPST is not a prerequisite for applying to the DLiTE program, it must be taken prior to enrolling in the first course.
  • An Internet connection, a video cassette recorder, a computer with at least 128MB RAM, and a CD-ROM drive.
  • The appropriate operating system and browser to support the course management software chosen by Bemidji State University.

The following prerequisite courses are required in the Bemidji State University Elementary Education program. DLiTE students must take MATH 1011 and MATH 1013 elsewhere and transfer these courses to the BSU program. Both courses must be taken prior to enrolling in ED 3221 Math Methods BUT NOT prior to beginning the elementary education program. Other courses that need to be taken prior to the end of the program, BUT NOT prior to beginning, include:

HLTH 3400 Health and Drugs in Society (2 semester credits)
HLTH 4100 Health Ed in the Elem. School (2 semester credits)

Specialty Areas
Minnesota requires teachers to have a specialty area of study for licensure. The DLiTE program offers three: Communication Arts and Literature, Science, and Social Studies. These courses can all be taken BEFORE or DURING the program. They are ALL available during the summer. Call 1-800-475-2001 and ask for the Center for Extended Learning for information. These courses are offered as independent studies, guided self directed, and online. They are not in the hybrid format employed by the DLiTE courses.

The Communication Arts and Literature specialty area courses include the following. Please note that they must be taught by faculty with at least a Master's Degree in Education.

REQUIRED:

  • ED 3208 Developmental Reading in the Middle School (3 semester credits)
  • ENGL 3540 Literature for Young Adults (3 semester credits)
  • ED 4737 Content Area Reading (2 semester credits)

SELECT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING (or a transfer equivalent):
  • ED 3217 Curriculum Enrichment Through Media Resources (3 semester credits)
  • ENGL 2410 Mythology, Legends, and Folktales (3 semester credits)
  • ENGL 3580 The English Language (3 semester credits)

The Science specialty area courses include the following. Please note that they must be taught by faculty with at least a Master's Degree in Science Education.

REQUIRED:

  • SCI 1110 Physical Science I (4 semester credits)
  • BIOL 1110 General Biology: Form and Function (4 semester credits)
  • BIOL 1120 General Biology: Evolution and Ecology (3 semester credits)
  • CHEM 1111 Introductory Chemistry I (4 semester credits)
  • SCI 3100 Integrative Science for Teachers (4 semester credits)
  • SCI 3450 Science Methods for Grades 5-8 (4 semester credits)

SELECT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
  • GEOL 1110 Physical Geology (4 semester credits)
  • GEOL 1120 Historical Geology (4 semester credits)

The Social Studies specialty area courses include the following. Please note that they must be taught by faculty with at least a Master's Degree in Social Studies.

REQUIRED:

  • ANTH 1110 Cultural Anthropology (3 semester credits)
  • ECON 2000 Markets and Resource Allocation (3 semester credits)
  • GEOG 2100 Introduction to Physical Geography (3 semester credits)
  • HST 2610 Minnesota History (3 semester credits)
  • POL 1200 Introduction to American Politics (3 semester credits)

SELECT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
  • HST 3409 Colonialism and Modernization in the Non-Western World (3 semester credits)
  • ANTH 2100 Native North Americans (3 semester credits)
  • GEOG 2200 Introduction to Human Geography (3 semester credits)
  • PSY 3210 Death and Culture (3 semester credits)

Recommended Liberal Education coursework includes:
  • Introduction to Public Speaking
  • Introduction to Music Theory
  • Introduction to Art History
  • Introduction to Art Theory

Step 2 - Submit Application Materials

Submit your completed application materials for review.

First:
Be sure to complete the Bemidji State University Application Online
 
BSU Online Application  (click on BSU to access)

Make the following choices on the first page of the application:
For Type of Major, select "online"
For Intended Area of Study, select "Elementary Education"
For Intended Degree/Award, select "Bachelor of Science"

These will be sorted in the admissions office to ensure your application is processed for the DLiTE Program.

Second:
In addition to the Bemidji State University Online Application:


Fill out the DLiTE APPLICATION FORM and APPLICATION CHECKLIST PDF format Microsoft Word format

Print, Complete, and Send the DLiTE Application Form, Application Checklist, and the signed Mentor Application Form in one envelope to:

Step 3 - Application Review by DLiTE Program Manager/
 
Your application materials will be reviewed by the Program Manager of the DLiTE program.

Step 4 - Application Review by Bemidji State University
/
 
Your application will be reviewed by Bemidji State University.

Once your application has reached Bemidji State University and is approved for entry, you will receive a letter of acceptance. Finally, you will receive a new student packet of information from The DLiTE office.

NOTE: This step could take 3-4 weeks.
