Thesis/Research/Capstone

Depending on your department or program, you may have the option of completing a research paper, thesis, or capstone project.  Make sure to discuss your options with your advisor.

When preparing for this final step, be sure to acquire the correct format/style manual.  For example, students who complete a Master of Science degree will most likely need to use a current APA manual.  Those who complete a Master of Arts will need a current MLA manual.  Both manuals can be found in the BSU Bookstore.

Students will also need to access the Handbook for the Preparation of the Thesis or Research Paper, which can be found at the Graduate Studies website.  Sometimes an additional department handbook is also required (e.g. the Creative Thesis Handbook for an MA in English).  Be sure to check with your advisor about any additional handbooks or manuals they believe you will use.

Thesis

A student electing the Thesis Option is required to submit one (1) original and one (1) photocopy of the thesis to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree.

The thesis must demonstrate an ability to work independently, and give evidence of independent thought, both in perceiving problems and making satisfactory progress toward their solution.

All theses must be prepared in accordance with the Handbook for the Preparation of the Thesis or Research Paper, which may be accessed on the School of Graduate Studies website, and any additional corresponding formatting manual required by the department or School of Graduate Studies.

English Creative Thesis - Optional

This thesis is an option for students who are completing a MA in English only. Students who complete this thesis will need to use the Creative Thesis Handbook for an MA in English.  For more information on this option, contact your advisor.

Research Paper

A student electing the Research Paper Option is required to submit one (1) original copy of the research paper to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree.

The research paper must be prepared in accordance with the Handbook for the Preparation of the Thesis or Research Paper, which may be accessed on the School of Graduate Studies website, and any additional corresponding formatting manual required by the department or School of Graduate Studies.

Capstone Experience/Project

Every Applied Masters program must include a capstone experience, i.e. an experiential-based activity typical of preparation for practice in the field.

The appropriate handbooks for these items can be found under Final Project Handbooks.
