Liberal Education

Liberal Education is a 42-credit general education requirement for the bachelor's degree. Students often concentrate these courses in their freshman and sophomore years. The "Lib Ed" program offers students of diverse backgrounds and abilities the knowledge, skills, values, and confidence necessary for effective and responsible participation in our changing global society.

A bachelor's degree at Bemidji State requires study in two primary areas: Liberal Education and a major. Courses may also be taken for a minor or field of emphasis, or may be used as general electives.

Some Liberal Education courses should be taken during the freshman year, such as College Writing and Mathematics. Others may be taken at any stage of the student's undergraduate program. "Lib Ed" courses may be coordinated with a major.

For effective planning, academic advisors should be consulted early and often.
