Career and Technical Education (Vocational Education) prepares people for careers in education, the trades, industry, and related occupations. The Career and Technical Education program at Bemidji State University trains career and technical education instructors for secondary, post-secondary, and industry-based teaching positions. Career and Technical Education majors typically have prior work experience in the field they wish to teach in, and credits may be awarded for that experience. Technical credits earned at a two-year college may also apply toward degree requirements.

In Career and Technical Education, theories and other philosophical approaches to education are taught in the context of practical experience. For example, students who wish to teach in the construction area will already have work experience in that area, and that experience is complemented with teaching methodologies. Career and Technical Education offers degree and non-degree licensures. State of Minnesota Career and Technical Education licensure requirements vary between secondary and post-secondary levels. Individuals should consult with an advisor to determine the specific requirements for their field.

The Bachelor of Science in Career and Technical Education does not meet licensure requirements for secondary school teaching in technology education or business education.

Teacher licensure requirements vary significantly between secondary and postsecondary Career and Technical Education. There are many options and specializations, and appropriate subsequent courses to complete. Various methods of documenting related work experience may also be required. Given these conditions, individuals should consult with a faculty advisor to determine what requirements will need to be met.
