Guidelines

DEADLINE: October 10th, 2009

General

• For Minnesota high school students grades 10 through 12. 
  Submissions not accepted from middle school or junior high school students.
• Submit by postal mail.
• Typed manuscripts, in 12 point Times or Times New Roman.
• Submission implies permission to print in the New Voices anthology and to use in promotional materials.
• Submissions will be acknowledged in late December.
• Submissions cannot be returned; please keep a copy.
• Writers retain copyright.

Fiction

• One short story or one novel excerpt; maximum words: 1,200.

Poetry

• Up to three poems; maximum lines in each: 35.

NEW CATEGORY

Graphic Short Story

• Up to 8 pages long; page size is 5.5 x 8 inches (one-half of an 8.5 x 11 sheet). Work will be reproduced in 5.5 x 8 inch format, so plan "panes" and lettering accordingly. (If we choose your story, we will request that you send us high quality scans electronically.)

Required Submission Form

The following information helps us keep track of your work and assures that we can find you for notification of the results of your submission.

• Make sure that your name is on every sheet of paper.
• Complete a Submission Form and include it in your packet.  The form is available at www.bemidjistate.edu/newvoices or by calling 218-755-2880.
• You may make your own Submission Form.  Include this information:
  • Your Name
  • Your Grade Level
  • Your School’s Name
  • Your Teacher’s Name
  • Your Home Address (for notification)
• You may submit in both poetry and fiction but must include a separate Submission Form for each genre. Poetry and fiction are read by different editorial boards.  The forms allow us to keep your contact information with your work.  We receive nearly 1,000 submissions so we appreciate your help with this.  Poetry and fiction may be sent in one envelope.
