"The use of social work ethics in theory building, research and practice"

The purpose of the course is to examine how a systematic consideration of social work ethics and values can contribute to considerations of theory, and means of undertaking research and using research findings, as well as how values and ethics can be used to reflect upon and develop practice.
We welcome attendance from those keen to discuss these issues within a European and wider international context, and for submission of papers exploring themes concerning how ethics and values in social work affects practice, management, policy and research
Areas may include:
- ethical standards for social workers
- professional ethics ('obligatory' ethics) and 'independent' ethics (reflection on social worker's own actions)
- ethical principles (rules) of making decisions in social work
- ethical dilemmas in practice and management:
- conflict of personal and professional interests
- ethical implementation of programmes and social welfare policies
- ethical issues in research
- ethical approaches to theory building
For those wishing to present a paper in addition to attending, please submit a 200 word abstract concerning the content of the presentation for peer review by the Course team by the end of January 2008 to Brian Littlechild, B.littlechild@herts.ac.uk
