This course is intended for highly qualified paraprofessionals and teachers from northern Minnesota who wish to expand their knowledge of the foundations of arithmetic. Objectives of the course are to: 1) provide content instruction using mathematical models that enhance the participants' understanding of the foundations of arithmetic, 2) provide instructional models for teaching the foundations of arithmetic that can be used in the classroom, 3) provide instructional models that increase the participants' motivation to teach math effectively, 4) provide the participants with instructional methods for enhancing motivation and improving student learning, 5) provide instruction and assessment consistent with the Minnesota Academic Standards.

This course is intended for highly qualified paraprofessionals and teachers who have completed Arithmetic Foundations I. Objectives of the course are to: 1) provide content instruction using mathematical models that enhance the participants' understanding of prime and composite numbers, rational numbers, decimals and integers, 2) provide instructional models for teaching rational numbers, decimals, and integers that can be used in the classroom, 3) provide instruction in mathematical problem solving that will enhance the participants' mathematical reasoning skills, 4) provide the participants with problem solving activities that can be used in their classrooms to enhance motivation and improve student learning, 5) provide instruction and assessment consistent with the Minnesota Academic Standards.

Outdoor Rock Climbing -- Needles Trip

An additional $350 trip fee, which may cover both this course and PHED 1950 Camping Techniques, is paid directly to the Outdoor Program Center.

Seminar in Scene Painting

Introduction to the craft of scenic art. Students create studio projects and work on mounted productions to master the skills of creating faux materials, three-dimensional trompe l'oeil, and evocative images in paint. Also focuses on safety for the artist. The course is appropriate for students at any level.

Collage: Explorations in Mixed Media

A hands-on introduction to visual journaling and making artist's books using mixed media. Several book models are introduced as well as many techniques for page decoration.
