Welcome to Bemidji State University’s Life CHOICES Program!

WANGZ

Student-Athletes will face many different experiences throughout their academic careers, and thereafter. To help student-athletes meet these challenges head on, Bemidji State’s Department of Athletics will help offer the Life Skills needed to overcome these challenges while developing and improving skills they need to succeed in life.

The goal of the Life CHOICES Program at BSU is to develop the leadership and Life Skills that students need to become healthy and successful members of a global community, while empowering students to make responsible decisions—especially when facing risky situations. Within this, the program will implement and evaluate alcohol-related education and prevention programs, as well as increase collaboration between the campus athletic department, other campus organizations, and community organizations involved in alcohol education and awareness initiatives.

The Life CHOICES Program at BSU is partly based on the NCAA CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success) program that provides educational opportunities that promote the following areas:

Equity
Healthy Choices
Positive Life Skills
Safe Environments
Academic Success
Community Leadership

Student-athletes will have the opportunity to attend various educational opportunities that address Life Skill CHOICES, whose elements are based on the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program.  These elements consist of the following five commitment statements:

Commitment to Academic Excellence:
To support the academic progress of student-athletes towards intellectual development and graduation.

Commitment to Athletic Excellence:
To build philosophical foundations for the development of athletic programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student-athlete.

Commitment to Personal Development:
To support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes, encourage emotional well-being, leadership, personal growth and decision-making skills.

Commitment to Career Development:
To encourage the student-athlete to develop and pursue career and life goals.

Commitment to Community Service
To engage the student-athlete in service to his or her campus and surrounding communities.
