BSU ice hockey teams hold their own
in the classroom
Beavers maintain good standing with NCAA for academic progress |
May 9, 2008
BEMIDJI, Minn. - The
Bemidji State University men’s and women’s ice
hockey teams have again met the Academic Progress Rate (APR)
standards set fourth by the National Collegiate Athletics
Association (NCAA). These scores provide performance benchmarks
for all NCAA Division I programs under the Association’s
standards for academic progress and performance beginning
with data from the 2003-04 and extending through the 2006-07
academic year. The association released its most recent Academic
Progress Report to the public Wednesday.
The Bemidji State men’s hockey led College Hockey America
(CHA) with a score of 973 while the institution’s women’s
team scored a 967 to rank fifth out of eight teams in the
Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA).
“Bemidji State athletics programs have a long history
of academic success,” said BSU Director of Athletics
Dr. Rick Goeb. “Our hockey programs,
in particular, have excelled academically when compared with
their peers.”
In addition to continued success meeting the NCAA’s
APR standards, the BSU men’s team posted a league-best
18 Academic All-CHA selections in 2007-08 and has led the
league in that category during each of the last six seasons.
The women had 13 student-athletes named to the WCHA All-Academic
squad, led the WCHA with nine Scholar Athletes and have
the distinct honor of being the only team in the league to
have had three of its team members picked for WCHA Student
Athlete of the Year accolades.
“The fact that these two programs have again met these
standards comes as no surprise to us,” Goeb continued.
“The NCAA score is an affirmation of the hard work and
dedication of the coaching staffs of these two sports, and
reflects their dedication to developing true student-athletes.”
Nationally, the cumulative APR score of all men’s ice
hockey programs was 970, third among
men’s sports behind only fencing (977) and
water polo (975).
Women’s ice hockey was fourth among women’s
sports at 978 although it scored higher than any men's sport.
Every program in the two conferences in which Bemidji State
competes--WCHA and CHA--received passing scores.
The APR is derived from a formula which represents the eligibility,
retention and graduation rates of all student-athletes. A
score of 925 has been established by the NCAA as the benchmark
of satisfactory academic progress in every sport. The APR
of 925 is equivalent to a graduation success rate of approximately
60 percent.
While nearly all 6,272 Division I teams are achieving or exceeding the standards for academic performance based on four years of APR data, teams failing to meet the standard may be subject to penalties
that could result in the loss of scholarships for one year.
This year 218 teams from 123 institutions were sanctioned for poor performance.

reinforce its commitment academics and to help ensure the
quality education of its student-athletes, visit the NCAA’s
