BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Brianna Duff (So., M, Ramsey, Minn.) and Derek Edholm (Jr., QB, Anoka, Minn.) have been selected as Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after outstanding athletic performances during the week of Aug. 31-Sept. 6.
Duff, a mid-fielder for the BSU soccer team, netted two goals and notched an assist on Friday, Sept. 4 against Northwestern (Iowa) College, bringing her season total to four goals and three assists and leading the Beavers to a 7-0 victory. On Saturday she created multiple scoring chances for the Beavers from the wing, but was unable to get any points as Dordt shut out BSU 1-0.
Edholm, a junior quarterback and 2009 team captain, rushed for 116 yards on 23 carries in the Beavers’ heartbreaking 37-34 overtime loss to No. 10 Minnesota State University, Mankato Sept. 5. His 100-yard rushing day put him in elite company. Since 1980, only two other BSU quarterbacks have rushed for 100 yards or more in a single game. His 116 yards ranks second only to Marty Follis who gained 140 yards versus, Wayne State College Nov. 14, 1992. In addition to his yards on the ground, he completed 10-of-16 pass attempts for 69 yards through the air.
Duff and the BSU soccer team, which is 3-0-1 on the season, hosts Jamestown College Friday in the 2009 home opener. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at the BSU Soccer Complex.
The BSU football team hosts No. 20 Winona State University Saturday in the team’s 13th Annual Shrine Game Saturday. The Beavers, who are 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play, look to extend their home winning streak to six games and garner their first NSIC victory of the season. The game is set for 1 p.m. at Chet Anderson Field.
