Grimm has carried on the baseball tradition in Bemidji as
player, coach and administrator for more than 20 years in
northern Minnesota, and after a lifetime of studying the game,
he has combined experience and talent to guide the BSU baseball
program. Now entering his fifth season as the Bemidji State
University head baseball coach, Grimm has a plan in the works
to continue elevating the Beaver baseball program to excellence.
He opened his head coaching career at BSU with a trying inaugural
season, but responded in year two by leading a determined
Beaver team to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference
(NSIC) championship with a 14-4 league mark, the best conference
record for a BSU team since 1982.
Grimm, who served as a BSU assistant coach in 1982, and again
from 1984-88, celebrated a pair of NSIC championships in the
80's, and helped BSU to the NAIA College World Series in 1982,
the first national playoff appearance in school history.
A native of Bemidji, Grimm graduated from Bemidji High School
in 1976 with All-State accolades and as the Horace May Award
recipient, distinguishing him as the team's outstanding player.
He earned a degree from Bemidji State University in 1982 and
immediately made an impact in the northern Minnesota baseball
scene by serving 10 years as Regional Commissioner for the
Men's Amatuer Baseball Association, an association that produced
major leaguers Paul Molitor and Terry Steinbach. He also served
on the State Board for the Men's Amatuer Baseball Association
(1984-1992), and was the Director of City Recreation Baseball
in Bemidji (1985-1990)
Grimm began his coaching career in 1980 with the Bemidji
Chiefs amatuer men's baseball team, and continued that role
until 1992. After closing out his assistant coaching stint
with BSU in 1988, Grimm moved into an assistant coaching position
with Bemidji High School from 1989-1994, and served as head
ooach for the American Legion squad from 1993-1995.
Grimm's commitment to baseball earned him the inaugural Dan
Olson Award in 1991, given annually in honor of the former
Bemidji State player to the individual who embodies hustle,
dedication and a true love for the game.
Jim, wife Sue and daughter Sylvia (2) reside in Bemidji.
