BEMIDJI, Minn. - Bemidji State took advantage of strong
starting pitching, timely hitting and a porous Minnesota,
Crookston defense to sweep a Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference double-header, 16-2 and 9-3, this afternoon at
BSU Baseball Field.
The Golden Eagles committed nine errors in the double-header,
six in Game 1 alone, leading to 10 unearned BSU runs for the
day.
We played well and took advantage of Crookstons
mistakes, BSU head coach Jim Grimm said. I was
happy with the pitching performance and I was pleased with
our defense in the conditions we had to play in.
The pitchers didnt throw too many pitches, so
all four will be ready this weekend if we need them,
Grimm added.
In Game 1, three errors by Crookston third baseman Randy
Thompson in the first two innings helped the Beavers take
a 6-0 lead, with all six runs unearned. Thompsons fielding
error on Gunner Gellers ground ball down the line with
two out in the first eventually led to the first BSU run,
and Thompson committed a fielding and a throwing error in
a five-run BSU second. All six of BSUs unearned runs
in the first two innings of Game 1 came with two outs.
After being held scoreless in the third, BSU put up four
more runs in the bottom of the fourth on a grand slam from
Geller to go up 10-0, then added six runs in the bottom of
the fifth. BSU had six hits in the fifth, including a triple
from Geller.
Geller led five Beavers with two or more hits in the contest,
finishing the game 3 for 4 at the plate with two runs scored
and a career-high six RBI. Gellers six RBI are the most
by a BSU player since Joe Thoma also had six against Wayne
State on April 18, 1999. Shaun Ross went 3-for-3 with two
RBI and four runs scored, Nate Olson went 3-for-4 with an
RBI and two runs scored and Ben Woodford and Isaac Smieja
had two hits apiece to lead the 16-hit BSU attack.
Shaun Zenner shut out the Golden Eagles for five innings,
allowing just two hits while striking out six and walking
only one. Zenner earned the win for the Beavers, improving
to 3-1. Tyler Norland came on in relief to pitch the sixth
and seventh. Norland allowed two runs (one earned) on two
hits with two strikeouts. BSUs eight team strikeouts
tie its season high, set in the opener against Edinboro on
March 10.
BSU again took advantage of Crookstons defense in Game
2, plating nine runs on just four hits in a 9-3 win to complete
the sweep. BSU scored five runs on just two hits in the second
inning thanks to three Crookston errors - a fielding error
by the center fielder, a throwing error by the second baseman
and a fourth error of the double-header from the third baseman.
Crookston pulled within 5-3 with a single run in the top
of the third and a pair of runs in the fifth, but BSU put
the game away with a three-run fifth. After each of the first
two BSU batters in the inning walked, a two-RBI double from
Isaac Smieja and a Brian Beuning RBI single iced the game
for BSU.
The Beavers added an insurance run in the sixth without the
benefit of a hit. Nate Olson led off the inning with a walk,
and after a second walk and a hit batsman loaded the bases
with none out, Olson scored on a wild pitch.
Olson started on the hill for BSU, pitching four innings
and allowing one run (one earned) on two hits. He walked one
batter and earned the win for BSU, improving to 2-1 on the
year. Nate Heim came on in relief and earned the save, allowing
two runs (one earned) on three hits in three innings of work.
He struck out three and walked three.
Crookston pitchers issued 10 walks for the game, eight by
starting pitcher Chad Hasse alone. The Eagles started out
the second, fifth and sixth innings by walking the first two
BSU batters of the inning, and all nine BSU runs came in those
three frames.
Olson supported his own cause at the plate. He had just one
at-bat but walked three times and scored two runs. Isaac Smieja
went 1 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Brian Beuning
led the team with two hits.
Steven Lee led the Golden Eagles with a 2-for-3 day at the
plate with two RBI and a run scored in Game 2.
The sweep moved BSU to 9-5 on the season, 4-2 in the NSIC.
Crookston fell to 2-14 overall, 2-4 in the NSIC. BSU has now
won four consecutive games, its longest winning streak since
winning eight consecutive games from April 21-26, 2000.

with two outs.
The 16 runs scored in Game 1 represented BSUs
highest-scoring output against an NSIC foe since plating 20

the next 10 batters he faced.April 10, 2002
