MAY 5, 2003
Minneapolis, Minn. - Bemidji State junior pitcher Scott Pugliese
has been named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Co-Pitcher
of the Week for the week of May 5, the NSIC office announced
today.
Pugliese was 2-0 in two appearances for Bemidji State
last week, posting the first two victories of his BSU career
after
a hard-luck 0-7 start to the season. He posted a win in
one inning of relief against St. Cloud State on April 30,
then
dominated Concordia-St. Paul in a six-inning start on May
2.
Pugliese allowed two unearned runs in one inning of work
in the April 30 win over St. Cloud State. Then against
Concordia on May 2, Pugliese led BSU to a 1-0 shutout win.
In 6.0 innings
of work, Pugliese allowed just three hits, struck out six
and
walked none.
It is Pugliese’s first career NSIC weekly
honor. He shared the award with Winona State’s Josh
Schultz, who threw a complete-game four-hit shutout of Northern
State.
Pugliese
is the third BSU player to win NSIC weekly honors
this season. Brian Beuning was named Co-Pitcher of the
Week on April 8, and Tony Klaers earned Co-Player of the
Week
honors on April 22.
Bemidji State finished its 2003 baseball
campaign
last weekend by splitting a four-game series with Concordia-St.
Paul. The
Beavers ended the season with a 15-27 overall record, an
even 11-11 in NSIC play. The 2003 Beavers played 40 or more
games
for just the ninth time in school history, with the team’s
42 games tied for seventh-most in a season in school history.
in addition, the team was one of just seven in school history
to win 10 or more conference games. The team’s 11 NSIC
wins under first-year head coach Chris Brown marked the program’s
second-most ever under a rookie head coach. |
