Beavers lose 25-0, 20-4 decisions in season opener EDMOND,

1 box][game 2 box] The Bemidji State baseball
team opened its 2004 season with 25-0 and 20-4 losses to
the Central Oklahoma Bronchos today.
Central Oklahoma, an NCAA Division II regional power which
has been to , had already played 13 games before hosting
the Beavers, who were making their season debut.
The Bronchos pounded out 41 hits with seven doubles and
six home runs in the twinbill, while holding Bemidji State
to 10 hits on the day and striking out 20. Only one of
BSU’s hits - a Dan Marshall double in Game 2 - went
for extra bases. BSU pitchers also issued 12 walks, hit
six Broncho batters and threw five wild pitches. The Beavers
committed seven errors, which led to six unearned Broncho
runs.
For the day, BSU’s pitching staff allowed 41 hits
in 71 at-bats (.547) and had a staff earned-run average
of 29.25.
Central Oklahoma plated four runs in the bottom of the
first inning of Game 1 and never looked back. The Bronchos
scored in every inning, following the four-run first with
two in the second, one in the third, four in the fourth,
an 11-run explosion in the bottom of the fifth and a three-run
sixth. BSU managed just two hits, singles by Matt Middendorf
and John Grindeland.
Scott Pugliese started and picked up the loss for BSU.
He allowed seven runs (five earned) on five hits in 3.0
innings with four walks. Kyal Brandt started the fourth
for the Beavers; he allowed 10 runs (all earned) on nine
hits in 1 1/3 innings. Joe Ferguson and Chad Schwegal closed
it out for BSU.
Three Broncho pitchers combined to hold BSU to two hits
in seven innings.
Bemidji State held a 1-0 lead after one inning in Game
2, but Central Oklahoma plated five in the second and three
in the third to grab an 8-1 lead and put the Beavers away.
BSU clawed back to within 8-4 heading into the bottom of
the fifth, but as in Game 1 the Bronchos exploded in the
fifth to put the game away. After plating 11 fifth-inning
runs in Game 1, Central Oklahoma scored 10 times in the
fifth in Game 2.
Russell Berner went 4 1/3 innings for BSU in Game 2, taking
the loss after allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on 11 hits.
He walked one and struck out one. Bryant Salamone lasted
just a third of an inning in relief of Berner; he allowed
seven runs (all earned) on just three hits. Middendorf
and Grindeland led the BSU offense with two hits each,
with Middendorf adding an RBI and a run scored.
The losses leave Bemidji State at 0-2 on the season while
Central Oklahoma improved to 9-6. The teams are back in
action tomorrow with a single game at 12:30 p.m. Central
time.
