Junior infielder had two home runs, 10 RBI in six games last week

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Bemidji State infielder Tony Klaers (Elk River, Minn.) has been named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Baseball Player of the Week for his efforts in six games last week, the NSIC office announced today.

In six games for Bemidji State last week, Klaers went 11-for-13 (.524) at the plate with three doubles, a triple, two home runs and 10 RBI. He slugged over 1.000 for the week, picking up 22 total bases in 21 at-bats (1.048). Klaers also walked four times, giving him an on-base percentage of .577. He struck out just once and was errorless in 44 chances in the field.

Klaers decimated Minn.-Crookston’s pitching staff in a four-game BSU sweep over the weekend, going 8-for-14 (.571) with two doubles, a triple, two home runs and 10 RBI. He slugged at 1.286 in the four-game set with a team-high 18 total bases.

Klaers is the first BSU baseball player to earn NSIC Player of the Week honors this season.

Bemidji State has won eight of its last nine games, including six consecutive conference wins, and has moved into a tie for fourth place in the NSIC standings with Winona State at 7-9 in league play. The top four teams in the NSIC qualify for the conference’s post-season tournament. BSU is 9-30 overall, 7-9 in NSIC play.
