Pilgrim hits first homerun of the season
BEMIDJ, Minn. (BSU Baseball Field) - [Game
1] [Game 2]-
The Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs completed
a four-game weekend sweep over the Beavers this afternoon
at the BSU Baseball Field. In a pitcher’s dual SMSU’s
John Goneau outlasted Bemidji State pitcher Chad Schwegel
(St. Joseph, Minn.) to led the Mustangs to a 1-0 shutout win
in Game 1, and then the Mustangs put up 15 runs in Game 2
to take the night cap 15-3.
Game 1 saw two outstanding pitching performances from the
Mustangs John Goneau and the Beavers Chad Schwegel. Goneau
pitched a complete game shutout scattering five Beaver hits
with four strikeouts in seven innings of work. Schwegel matched
Goneau inning for inning until the sixth inning. The Mustangs
Andy Cook led off the sixth and took advantage of a mistake
by Schwegel, hitting a solo homerun over the right field wall
to put the Mustangs up 1-0.
The one run was enough for Goneau as he shut down the Beaver
offense in the sixth and seventh inning to secure a 1-0 win
for the Mustangs.
Schwegel pitched seven strong innings for the Beavers allowing
one run (one earned) on five hits with five strikeouts. The
loss drops Schwegel to 1-3 on the season.
The Mustangs scored 12 runs combined through the fifth, sixth,
and seventh innings to garner a 15-3 win in Game 2. Out of
the 15 runs only six of those runs were earned.
Bemidji State took its first lead of the day in the bottom
of the first inning. The Beavers put together a two out rally
to push two runs across and take a 2-0 lead. Josh Juntunen
(Elk River, Minn.) started the rally with a single to center
field. Eric Pilgrim (Park Rapids, Minn.) and Tony Samuelson
(Pine City, Minn.) hit back-to-back RBI double’s to
plate the two runs for the Beavers.
The Mustangs scored ten unanswered to take a 10-2 lead into
the bottom of the sixth inning. The Mustangs platted three
runs in the third and fifth inning and then scored four runs
in the sixth inning. The Beavers pushed one run across in
the sixth inning on a solo homerun by Eric Pilgrim to bring
the score to 10-3 in favor of the Mustangs. The solo shot
was Pilgrim’s first homerun of the season.
The Mustangs scored five unearned runs in the top of the seventh
and then shutdown the Beaver offense in the bottom of the
seventh to take game two of the doubleheader and complete
the weekend sweep over the Beavers.
Bemidji State starting pitcher Kevin Morel (Shoreview, Minn.)
gave up six runs (two earned) in five innings of work on eight
hits with one strikeout and one walk. Morel took the loss
for the Beavers seeing his record drop to 1-4 on the season.
Bryan Buhr (Frazee, Minn.) and Brent Vollbrecht (Morristown,
Minn.) each pitched a inning in relief; Buhr gave up four
runs (four earned) on five hits and Vollbrecht gave up five
runs (none earned) on four hits with one strikeout and one
walk.
Adam Schrader started on the mound for the Mustangs allowing
two runs (two earned) on five hits with two walks and six
strikeouts. Schrader’s record improved to 5-2 on the
season for the Mustangs. Nick Cobb and Brandon Wagner each
pitched an inning of relief; Cobb pitched the sixth, allowing
one run (one earned) on two hits with one strikeout and Wagner
gave up one hit in the seventh inning.
Pilgrim led the Beavers at the plate as he went 4-for-6 on
the day with two RBI and two runs scored.
Bemidji State (6-33 / 4-16 NSIC) will be in action next on
Tuesday, April 24 as the Beavers will travel to Grand Forks,
N.D. to play a doubleheader against the University of North
Dakota Fighting Sioux. The first pitcher for Game 1 of the
doubleheader is slated for 1:30 p.m.
