Langlie strikes out seven in complete game effort
BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Baseball Field) - [Game
1] [Game 2]-
The Bemidji State baseball team dropped a pair of Northern
Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) games to the University
of Mary Marauders today at the BSU baseball field. The Marauders
downed the Beavers 3-1 in Game 1 and then scored seven unanswered
runs in Game 2 to complete the sweep, 7-4.
Senior pitcher Josh Langlie (Thief River Falls, Minn.) had
a excellent performance on the mound in Game 1 for the Beavers,
pitching seven strong innings. In a losing effort, Langlie
gave up three runs (two earned) on nine Marauder hits, while
striking out seven batters with one walk in his seven innings
of work.
The Marauders opened up the scoring in the second inning.
Tyler Liffrig led the inning off for the University of Mary
reaching on a three base error by Bemidji State right fielder
Ryan Bohannan (Goodyear, Ariz.). The Marauders took advantage
of the Beaver’s mistake as next batter Casey Gray drove
Liffrig in on a RBI single to center field to take a 1-0 lead.
Bemidji State missed an excellent scoring opportunity in the
bottom of the third. The Beavers loaded the bases with one
out in the inning but was unable to push any runs across.
The University of Mary increased it’s lead to 3-0 through
five innings of play. Brennan Quintus led the fourth inning
off with a double to left center field and then eventually
scored on a wild pitch. In the fifth inning Ryan Lee hit a
homerun to left field to give the Marauders a 3-0 lead.
Bemidji State broke up the shutout in the sixth inning as
the Beavers Anthony Turk (Little Falls, Minn.) drove in his
sixth RBI of the season to bring the Beavers with in striking
distance a 3-1. The Marauders pitchers shutdown the Beavers
from there to garner a 3-1 win.
Langlie picked up the loss for the Beavers, dropping his record
to 0-6 on the season.
Matt Leer pitched five solid innings for the University of
Mary, allowing no runs on seven hits with three strikeouts,
improving his record to 4-5 on the season. Mike Feldman came
in for two innings of relief. Feldman allowed the lone Beaver
run on three hits with three strikeouts, picking up his sixth
save of the season for the Marauders.
Rich Bohannan (Goodyear, Ariz.), Anthony Stoloski (Half Moon
Bay, Calif.) and Josh Juntunen (Elk River, Minn.) each picked
up two hits in the game to lead the Beavers at the plate.
Game 2 was a game of big innings for both teams. Bemidji State
scored four runs in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead, but
saw the four run lead slip away as the Marauders scored six
runs in the fifth inning and one run in the sixth inning for
a 7-4 victory.
After going hit-less through the first two innings the Beaver
bats came alive in the third inning. The Beavers pushed the
first run across on Stoloski’s RBI walk. The next batter
Josh Juntunen (Elk River, Minn.) doubled to center field scoring
runners from second and third to give the Beavers a 3-0 advantage.
Juntunen’s double chased Marauder starting pitcher Blaze
Cullington from the game and Andrew Bartlett came in for relief.
The Beavers added one more run in the inning on a RBI single
by Eric Pilgrim (Park Rapids, Minn.) to garner a 4-0 advantage
through three innings of play.
Bemidji State pitcher Chad Schwegel (St. Joseph, Minn.) cruised
through the first four innings scattering four Marauder hits.
The Marauders were able to time up Schwegel in the fifth inning
as the Marauder offense exploded for six runs on seven hits
in the inning. The inning was highlighted by Dan Eichele’s
bases clearing three RBI triple and Michael Feldman’s
two run blast to left field.
The University of Mary played added an insurance run in the
sixth inning on a solo homerun by Andy Leer to push the Marauder
led to 7-4. BSU went down quietly in the bottom of the seventh
inning to wrap up the game.
Schwegel pitched 4 1/3 innings surrendering six runs (six
earned) on eleven hits with two strikeouts. Karl Willers (Slayton,
Minn.) and Josh Juntunen made relief appearances for the Beavers.
Willers went 2/3 of an inning with one strikeout while Juntunen
pitched two innings allowing one run on one hit with four
strikeouts.
Blaze Culliton lasted just 2 1/3 innings allowing all four
Beaver runs on three hits with one strikeout. Andrew Bartlett
and Tyler Porter came in for relief; Bartlett went 3 2/3 innings
allowing no runs on three hits with one strikeout and Tyler
Porter pitched one inning allowing just one hit.
Juntunen went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Beavers with two
RBI’s.
Bemidji State was its season mark move to 6-37 overall after
the sweep, 4-18 in NSIC play, while the University of Mary
moved to 13-16 and 9-7 in league play. Bemidji State will
wrap up its home portion of the season this weekend as the
Beavers will host the Wayne State College Wildcats in a four
game series on Saturday and Sunday. The first pitch for Saturday’s
double-header is slated for 1:30 and the first game on Sunday
will start at 12:00 p.m.
