ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference today announced that Bemidji State freshman kicker/punter Paul Potemra (Poolesville, Md.) has been selected NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in BSU’s NSIC-opening victory over Minnesota State University, Moorhead Sept. 15th.
Potemra continued his flawless kicking streak Saturday converting each of his three PATs and was two-for-two on field goal attempts making a career-long 40-yard attempt in the first half and adding a 27-yarder late in the game.
In addition to covering the BSU kicking duties, the converted soccer stand-out also serves as the teams punter. On four punts, Potemra racked up 165 yards for an average of 41.2 yards per punt and landed three inside the Dragons' 20 yard line--including a career-long 60-yard bullet.
Wayne State College quarterback Silas Fluellen was named as the NSIC Offensive Player of the Week while Anthony Calamita of Upper Iowa University earned the Defensive Player of the Week honor.
The honor is the first in Potemra's young collegiate career and is the second earned by a BSU player this season. He follows Anthony Schreiber who was the recipient of the Special Teams Player of the Week award a week ago.
The Beavers, 2-1 overall and 1-0 in league play, return to action Saturday (Sept. 22) when they travel west on Highway 2 to Crookston, Minn. to challenge the University of Minnesota, Crookston in the annual "Hubcap Game." The conference tilt is set for a 1 p.m. at Ed Widseth Field.
